The Witcher Day/Night Cycle
Although the day and night cycle may go virtually unnoticed in some games, CDProjekt has taken great measures to ensure that the system used in The Witcher will be hard to miss. Here is a description of what they've done to ensure gamers notice the cycle:
"Neverwinter Nights had a system which allowed it to dynamically change the weather and the lighting as the time flows in the game. However, because of vast modifications to the original code, we weren't able to use this great system. As it was important to us to keep the changing weather, we decided to write the whole system from scratch. The mechanisms we created allow us to show a much more realistic flow of time and more dynamic weather conditions. During the game, the whole world behaves just as we would expect it to - the shadows change their positions, the sun moves through the sky, the moon appears at night.

Using the more advanced video cards, you'll even see the surroundings in shades of blue at night, just like in reality. The weather behaves similarly - the sky gets clouded, the environment gets darker, more grey. Heavy, dark clouds appear in the sky, the rain starts to drizzle, and it quickly turns into an Autumn downpour. Raindrops falling on the ground cause realistic splashes."
