Eek! Need help

Post by al'Lan »

Hello.

I was cleaning in me room the other day and found Planescape - Torment gathering dust in a corner. I had not played it in years, so went to my computer and installed it. I downloaded the patch (took me hours to find it.. is planescape-torment.com down?) and ran the game. Everything worked smoothly until I tried to get to zone to another quadrant of the Hive. I'm getting this message:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: D:\Planescape Torment\Torment.exe

abnormal program termination"

This happens as soon as I get to the loading screen, one inch of the bar has been covered.

If you know any way to fix this, please let me know

Which Windows have you got? Try uninstalling the game, and then reinstall it WITHOUT the patch.

The patch is not the problem. He said it's an old version of the game (it's only the new 2CD version that can't have the patch).

Try deleting everything in the game's subfolders called "cache" and "temp."

I deleted the "cache" and the "temp" folders, then tried again. This time it got to 50% on the loading bar :(

Windows XP.
I'll try reinstalling now..

Jeez, that's kind of weird. I play the 4 CD version patched to version 1.1 and I encountered the exact same problem and error message when I went from CD 2 to CD 3. Since I'd already played the game successfully and without a hitch about a year ago I just chalked it up to a scratched CD.

It drove me crazy for a while and I was ready to go over to Best Buy and try to find a new copy of the game (I mean, I was still in the Hive, for God's sake). I gave it one last try, and Bingo! the CD loaded.

I have no idea why this happened, other than that some small changes in the configuration of prior saved games or small alterations to the options settings could effect how the CD loads.

As others have said, it's nothing as major as the patch. I'd try copying my saved games to another folder, uninstalling the current game, reinstalling, moving one of my saved games back, and seeing how it goes.

In the old CD4 version one could copy all the data to hard disk thus removing the problem of accessing the hard disk. The problem might be linked to your CD Rom drive or a scratched CD.

Well... I've had certain problems with my CD-rom, so I had to dump the images from the CD, then mount the image again. That way I would not have to encounter the "gah, my CD rom stopped working and I haven't saved in 30 minutes" thing.

It might have happened something when I dumped the image of CD 2 which results in this.

I see no scratches on the CD big enough to make any problem.

You mean you did a manual "full install"? Did you make the necessary Torment.ini changes?

I made some changes in the .ini file (changed the read drive from my CD rom to the mounted drive)..
