Fantasy Football - Pick a Side
Ok, with all the excitement of the World Cup (or not...for some), I just thought of something which intrigued me. If you were in a fantasy world (I'm sure you sometimes think about it) and there was a World Cup of Football - after all, a form of football must have existed in medieval times - what race would you pick as a manager to lead to Fantasy World Cup victory?!
I would choose goblins (for lack of thinkin' hard) because they're dextrous, probably good with a ball, and good at cheatin', divin' in the area, spittin' and could work strong as a team.
Any thoughts out there?
PS: Intangible creatures are generally not allowed because they can't kick the ball, so you can't pick a side of ghosts. Also, MAGIC is allowed, but can't be used to transport the ball to the goal (that's called magic ball, much like hand ball)
EDIT - For all you North Americans, I'm talking about SOCCER - you know, that game you play with your foot which you're doing quite well with in the WC at the moment.

That confused me, too; but I was tipped off by the phrase "World Cup".Originally posted by Aegis
It seems my North American brain has confused "football" with Football.
And my elementals would kick your dwarves's asses.
Jesus saves! And takes half damage!

I've been thinkin' some more and:
"Welcome, ladies & gentlement, humans & non-humans to the Fantasy World Cup!! This year's event is co-hosted by Goblins and Kobolds - this is because they make excellent slaves and so have worked hard to reproduce this great event. I hope you will all enjoy it and good luck to every team!"
OK, this is the deal, I reckon it will be more fun to create a Fantasy Cup than jus' talk about it. So...what I want is for anybody to enlist their teams to this Cup so that I have enough to start it.
Since it would be too lengthy to duplicate a World Cup completely...all I ask for is 16 teams - and as a manager (you) can only have one team which constitutes of a single race or species. If you're interested, create a post in this thread with the post subject being "My Team" and talk a little bit about it.
eg: My Team
Kobolds
Generally very weak, easily injured, quick on the break though, have a good amount of flair & skill, but are cowardly and have been known to desert the soccer pitch when under pressure.
However, 2 teams are owned by me - Kobolds and Goblins - since they are co-hosts...so I'm really asking for 14 teams.
Once I get all the teams sorted, I'll create a draw which will not have a group stage, but will go straight on to the eliminatories. Thus, it's like starting at the second round of a normal WC. 8 teams will play the other 8 teams initially; normal soccer rules apply - though with a fantasy twist.
As soon as I give out the list of who's going to play who, and in what order, I'll let the battling teams each create only one post (at the time of the 'match') detailing their strategies. I'll then decide, adding commentaries, who wins.
Firstly, though, the simple thing - enlist your team!! I'll give more information later on...

I know nothing about Soccer (Football on your side of the pond ), but I'm in!
Go Dwarves! Short and Stocky, and not very fast, but put up one hell of a fight. They are known to aggresivly follow through whil 'butting the ball, and have been known to "accidently" hit a few opposing players in the process. Their high endurance allows them to play for long periods of time without rest, as long as they are given plenty of "ale" breaks along the way.

I've got dragons for my team. Do you want to forfeit the match now or later?

If it was an adamantite golem and it lay down in front of the goal, maybe.
Psst, Tammy, do you want to join my dragon team? You can supply the goalie.

I'm not sure, the kobolds and goblins appear to have run off after being scared by one of our strikers, and the dwarves are all too drunk to be able to walk, much less play.
Looks like we win by default.

IF I waa to join such a tournament, I WOULD choose a team of human sorcerers with a vile temper and some chain contigencies up their sleeves...

Famous Last Words:
"You can't kill me 'cause I've got magic armoraaaaargh !"
"They're only kobolds!"
So he kills kittens? Nothing to fear about that. (CM about Foul on SYM)
"Hey Beldin ! I don't like your face !"
"Nevermore."

I'll be the judge of that - don't think your dragons are gonna have it so easy.Originally posted by Ode to a Grasshopper

OK, at the moment we got 6 teams:
- Goblins
- Kobolds
- Dwarves
- Dragons
- Human Sorcerers (with chain contingencies as you put it)
- Golem
I just need 10 more, but there's no rush. I'm guessin' (unless I get a lot of replies) that the competition should start in 2 days.
PS: If you enlist your team, but can't be bothered to do anything else (eg. giving your strategy for every match) than that's no problem - either I or someone else will do that for you.
THE IMPORTANT THING IS ENLIST!!

First of all, Tammy and my team is dragons and one adamantite golem, who's our goalie.
Tammy can submit the moves if he wants, he knows more about soccer than me.

OK then, a dragon team with a golem goalie (generally it should be only one race or creature type but I'll make an exception).Originally posted by Ode to a Grasshopper

I guess now we need 11 teams once more.

well since you ppl have a dragon/golem team i choose a tarrasque team with an air elemental king as a goalie, wanna try to shoot the ball behind him, i thought so... since he'll stop it before you even shoot it...
tarrasques may not be the strongest, or the fastest, or the meanest creatures... oh wait, yes they are
tactics: hit them hard and fast until my team leads 10-0 then eat the opponant, maybe not the golem, just kick his arse to the other side of the realm...
nah nah nah nanaaaanahnanaa
