HOF saved games and characters
HOF saved games and characters
We've been discussing HOF with Iliphar lately, and found some info that may be useful for those not yet familiar with the Hear of Fury mode.
#1. HoF can be set up in the Configuration Panel, can't be accessed form the game.
#2. Once you start a HOF game, you won't be able to restore it to a simple game. You won't be able to change the difficulty settings either, you will have to play the whole game in insane mode.
#3. It's for a high level party only. You've got no chance to get to Ulbrec with lvl 8-10 characters...
#4. The XP amount for killing a monster is extreme (eg. 600 for a single goblin) - according to the effort you gotta make to kill it.
I also have a question, maybe some of you know the answer for it:
if I export a character from a HoF game, is it possible to import it back to normal game again? It would be a nice way to quickly get a lot of xp for that char... (ahem.. do I smell cheese here? )

So this is the way...
Thanx Brynn for this nice explanation. So I imagine I will have to restart (againX8) a new game from Targos docks and previously change the mode in the config panel. I suppose that the difficulty level I'm playing (MAX DIFF. in the option settings) is not the HOF one. I'll check tonight cause when I kill a goblin I get 37 xp or something like that, and not 600.....
Hasta la vista
By the way, what do you mean by "#3. It's for a high level party only. You've got no chance to get to Ulbrec with lvl 8-10 characters..."
at what stage do you mean that? before leaving with Oswald?
HLV
Right at the beginning. I got off the ship, headed straight to Ulbrec but didn't even reach the stairs leading up to the Town when 2 of us were already killed - by goblins, oh man

Best advice I have for HoF mode is this: You need to go to extremes.
1. If you're going into Melee combat you'd better be a killing machine, otherwise you'll get chewed up and spat out regardless of level. 400 Hp doesn't go as far as you'd think when most opponents hit 3-5 times per round and do 20+ damage on average.
2. Armour Class is overrated. Many opponents have a BaB of about 40 or more, so even on their last attack of the round they have a decent chance of hitting. Sacrifice armour class for armour that gives Stat increases, damage reduction, immunities or spell effects like freedom of movement. Cornugon Hide armour is very good (you get this from the Battle Squares section of the ice temple).
3. Don't bother with low level offensive spells, particularly disables as they will ALWAYS be saved against. Chromatic Orb, Horror, Hold Person, Confusion, Emot. Fear all pretty much useless even with GSF in the appropriate school. Instead devote these spell slots to utility spells like Dispel Magic, Mirror Image, Grease, Blink etc. and Buffing spells like Emot. Hope, Stoneskin and Malison. The one exception to this is Skull Trap. While it will be saved against, it doesn't have a max. damage of 10D6 like fireball etc. it does 1-6 per level period, so a 25th level sorc. does 25D6 save for 1/2. When you have Tymora's Band on or Lucky Knucky this makes for some serious damage.
4. Spells you can't live without: HEAL!, Symbol: Hoplessness, Finger of Death, Wail of the Banshee. Heal is essential, it should be the main spell your cleric memorises at level 6. Restoring your tanks HP to full at almost instant speed is a must and has saved my hide more times than I can count. Symbol: Hoplessness is so overpowered it's not funny. No other disabler compares. It's all schools, so any GSF will apply, very hard to save against being a level 8 spell and even affects Undead, although I don't think it should and to cap it off it has a very fast casting time. Having 2 or 3 of these cast into a group of attackers will basically win you nearly every fight as they will just stand there while you chop them down. Finger of Death is an instant kill with a fast casting time and difficult save, with Malison and/or recitation this was my main method of killing Gelugons and it woked first time more often than not - 10,000 XP thanks very much. Wail of the banshee is a mass Finger of Death centred on you (the only down side being that it can be cast from a distance) that's even harder to save against, what's not to like. Disintegrate works sometimes too, but is less reliable and for some reason my clerics Destruction spell is always saved against.
5. Weapons that have effects like fear, stun etc. like Valorfoe which were really good, now suck. This is because they almost all have a DC of 14 maning that they will almost always be saved against. Essentially there is a 5% chance of the effect happening (the chance of a critical failure). You are better off with weapons that do extra damage every time they hit as this can't be saved against. The exception to this is Saga of the Wandering Sky, which casts Doom when it hits, Doom has no save so it always works.

yes you can
"War does not determine who is right, it determines who is left"
There is of course a simpler way, enable cheats and give your character as many "How to be an Adventurer" books as you want, they are good for 10,000 XP each.
Both ways are cheating, so why not take the simpler one
And that book thing works only once per game..
You get 10,000xp per book. if you cheat and give yourself 2,3 or 20 of these they will each give you 10,000, so it's effectively a level up machine. Of course in the normal game without cheating you can only buy one of these and it disappears after use. Simpler than importing /exporting characters from 2 different games.
