Argg! Not Again!

Hi guys and gals,

I've got a techie problem with Baldurs Gate II and ToB. For some reason BG II won't uninstall, I mean don't get me wrong I needed the space for work but even though it won't unistall it stays in the registry. All of the files are gone (I deleted the remaing bits) and the registry doesn't have much to say either. What can I do apart from a full reinstall of windows to remove this damned thing?!?

Please help, I want to play it again. I've got a hankering for some dragon spanking...

Are you sure you got all the bits, try searching through for

SOA
BG2
baldur
bhall
blackisle
black isle
interplay

Things like that, just do a find from the top of the tree.

@ Sleepy, I still have saves that I want to keep of IWD and Planescape and that, I can't delete all of the Interplay and co files. With the searches it can't find anything else...

If i understand correctly some entries left in the registry and the main directory of the game was not deleted after unistalling. if this is the case just delete the directory, and You should try out RegCleaner , a nice small registry program that cleans the registry from any invalid or unused entries. It can also remove some programs that although they had been unistalled they were not removed from the "add/remove programs" feature in the control panel . I use it for quite some time know and i never had to deal with the registry manually. It's very easy to use and works with all OS

Funny you should mention that, it is a great program and completely free

@Nippy I meant in Registry, there are a lot of keys left by Windows that you might not have seen, sorry i was not more specific

Arg! Tried using RegClean to no avail. Everytime I click setup it goes back to "Would you like to uninstall the selected program?" Damn!

Actually i really like his site, it is very well laid out, plus it has an audio section which i think is brilliant, there are so few decent reviews of audio equipment

@Nippy, how did you use it, did you do the registry clean up in options, or did you go through individually removing the items?

Give a try to this as well:

Go to RegCleaner - tools - registry cleanup - do them all and then select all and remove them.

From BG2 known issues:

Here is the procedure to uninstall BG2:

Uninstall using the shortcut in the BG2 Start menu or the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. The game files should be removed from the user's hard drive and the shortcuts removed from the Start menu.

If step 1 failed, run "baldur.exe" from the CD. It should notify the user that the previous installation attempt failed and that they should try reinstalling the game using the program's Install button.

If step 2 failed, edit the "baldur.ini" file in the directory where the game was installed. Look for the "Installing" key under the "Program Options" section, set it to 1 ("Installing=1"), save the file and repeat step 2.

If step 3 failed, edit the system registry using the regedit / regedit32 utility. Remove the following keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ App Paths \ BG2Main.exe
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Uninstall \ {8DAE4336-2B71-11D4-9A6C-006067325E47}

Go to your Program Files directory and find the hidden directory "InstallShield Installation Information" and delete the directory labeled "{8DAE4336-2B71-11D4-9A6C-006067325E47}"

Manually delete all the files and directories created by the previous installation attempts (this should return the system to its state before the original installation attempt) and try again to install from the CD.

It may be the hidden directory causing you problems!

Yes!! Thanks for your help all, it was a registry problem and I have removed the troublesome directories, it's time to start whacking some nasties again...
