Your Favorite Game

Post by Bloodthroe »

There are a lot of MMORPGs coming out soon, and a lot already out. I was wondering which ones peeked other peoples interests. Why they like and or don't like MMORPGs.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

Well - currently - I don't have a favorite game.

The game I've played (and liked most so far) was DAoC, which I played for about 2½ years on and off.

But the MMOG I look most forward to currently is Dragon Empires, but because it is only in production (closed beta at the moment) - I can't say it is my favorite.
Reason I am intrigued by Dragon Empires is because is mostly because of its combat system. The world will contain cities that guilds can fight for control over - and there is a second form of combat where players can take on (optional) rolls of Bounty Hunters/Bandits and Traders.
There are many other features in this game, that draws me to the game.

But I'm also keeping a keen eye on games such as World of Warcraft, Dark and Light, Darkfall - and uptill recently Saga of Ryzom, which I helped beta test. (I have beta tested DAoC Europe, EVE-Online, SWG, Ryzom so far, would really like to be invited into Dragon Empires beta).

Edit: I've moved this thread to the Game Disucssion forum, because that forum also deals with general game stuff.

Oh yes, Dragon Empires seems to be quite interesting. Everquest 2 looks nice, too...

The last MMORPG I've played was Ultima Online on a free shard I already forgot the name of. It was nice, although I didn't like the lack of hardcore-RPG. When I tried to change to another, more hardcore-RPG free shard I got stuck in the registration. There were too many thieves...and I wanted to play a thief...so I uninstalled Ultima Online. About 3 years ago.

I haven't actually played many MMORPGs as of yet.... but I'm really looking forward to the release of WoW as I've always been a fan of blizzards work. A couple of friends of mine played Eve-online and that seemed pretty cool, but I never got around to trying it.

EVE-Online certainly have its moments, but for some reason it didn't quite catch me, eventhough I had some good online friends in that game.

But the universe of EVE isn't for the timid, due to being a heavy PvP game (essential full PvP) - which turns away many people. Many MMOG players seems to go more for the consentual type PvP, where people either have to assume roles that open up to PvP or enter specifically areas.

I never played a MMORPG, but maybe WoW will be my first, I think that games really is going to be great. What kept me from playing MMORPG was the fact you have to pay for them, but if you consider how much fun you can get from games it might be worth it.

Well the fee for online games is to support the costs associated with the high-quality levels of service and support. Another thing that WoW says is that the fee is also used to create ongoing content, like new quests, weapons, and monsters. So that the game won't be the same at any period of time. So it's in an active state of change. WoW plans to create a game that constantly evolves with new lands, monsters, items, and story.

The reason I don't like MMORPGs is that if you want to become one of the greatest, you have to spend lots of hours into it, play everyday and be completely dedicated to it. WoW supposibly won't be like that.

This is true to some extend of all MMOGs. For instance DAoC has seen many reworkings and alterations, the same has EVE-Online (which are the two I have retail experience with).

Also - another reason for the fee is that games as complex as MMOGs need a lot of patches. This is because of bugs, imbalances and adjustments having a much larger impact in such games where people play against and with each other.

One can argue that they dislike having to pay a fee to play such games, but I compare it to for instance television where you also need to pay for programs via licence fees, eventhough you have bought the television.

Also - due to alterations and the human elements, then if you like MMOGs you are likely to play them much more exclusive then one would single player games.
For instance, currently - I've been playing SW:KotOR, NwN(and expansion) and BG2:ToB. When I played MMOGs - I played only thoese games on consistant basis, and thus only bought few new games in that periode.

This I agree with to an extent. But generally - there are always some that wants to be the best in such games, and they will likely dedicate a load of time and ressources to playing them.
And just as in real life - the one with the most ressources (wether it be time and/or money) are more likely to "succeed" in things.

I "knew" people in DAoC that played two to three accounts simultanious to be better then thoese that only played one.
The current state of the game is (or was when I left) that you needed at least two accounts to compeete. This strikes me as stupid, but then again - thoese that want to be better then the rest, does things like this because it matters to them.
For a casual gamer as myself - the trick is to set smaller goals, and then remember that a game is played for fun - the moment it feels like work, then it is time to move on.

Some MMOGs are trying to change that trend, but I think they will be hard pressed to do so. MMOGs are very much about time and dedication if one wants to excell. Me - I just enjoy the multiplaying experience and the fun that can be had by getting to know new people and playing with them.

I just can't afford to spend that much time playing a video game. I have much more important things to do and like you said xan, those who put more time in things are more likely to succeed in them.

I will probably end up playing WoW when the time comes, and me being a big blizzard fan will spend lots of time into it, but I really can't afford the time it takes to play a MMORPG. So I'm still considering it. Also, like I said, WoW supposibly won't be like that and that draws me to it, but since I like Blizzard and Warcraft so much I might end up putting a lot of hours into it anyways.

How about some good ol' Thief:the dark project, or half-life, opposing force, blue shift, counter-strike. or how about some tom clancy games?

half-life was one of the best first person shooters that ive ever played growing up as a child, kind of primitive, but great for the time. and ive spent endless hours playing Wanted! the half-life western mod... oh yes those were the days.*sigh*.

I have been looking forward to the release of Half-life 2, my computer is well prepared for it! they are also coming out with a thief three game!

Well - I'm sure somebody enjoys thoese games (I play them occasionally myself) - but you will proberly have more luck, if you didn't post in a thread about massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs).
You could create a new thread if you wish to talk about Action/FPS games.

As I can't afford PPM, I haven't dipped into MMORPGs. Anarchy Online and City of Heroes are ones I would try if I could, probably. World of Warcraft I might get and find some way to pay.

Guild Wars isn't PPM though, so I might look at that.

World of Warcraft pre-TBC was THE MMO. Alterac Valley going on for days. Raids that required a ****ing brain. Aside from rogues - well balanced (i played a rogue by the way)

Warhammer : Age of Reckoning before EA announced that the game is going down the drain (around 1.2 patch?) was almost as good as the above. Great PvP. Ruined later on by.. Well, WAR players know by what.

Now? No idea, i ain't playing MMOs any longer :)

My favorite is Fallout 3, TES:IV Oblivion, Guild Wars (I quit using Guild Wars because it is simplistic, a pain in the *** to pay over 1000 golds to make a emblem of your guild, recruiting a member cost 100 golds per member, unfair levels of the players, NPCs, and enemies), Dragon Age Origins and Awakening, and one of the best mmorpg ever is World of Warcraft, all because I get into a slow start, and it's a little bit complicated, and it has everything, especially repairing your armors and weapons.
