I've had similar problems twice.
Once was the "familar" bug that was never resolved.
The other time was using any race not from the campaigns. (i.e. a race from Kaedrins.) ..and I've not always had this occur either.
My guess is that your problem is the "familiar" bug.
Basically the only way to fix it is load a saved game at a point where you did NOT enter a new "map" (from traveling) with a companion or familiar summoned.
You can stop this from occurring by going into the offending character's "sheet" and selecting the far right tab so that he or she does not auto summon.
Note: precisely *where* the bug occurs is nearly impossible to pin-point.
I do know though that it's more likely to occur with Sand's familiar than Elanee's companion.
A "tale-tell" sign that it most definitely HAS occurred is when a character's portrait is blacked-out (..and it's not due to any spell-effect).
So,
Best way to check is to load the game up before the trial and see if your companions have their portraits "blacked-out" (..and back further). Go back as far to a point in time as this hasn't occurred and then set your companions settings so that they don't auto summon their pets. Then hope that you don't have the same problem.
