what skills are essential and what is not that important for a mage?

Is it possible to walk through the game by only (or at least almost only) increasing Intelligence?

why should I carry around the crowbar, I cannot use this item.

Until I became a mage, I could use it, however. I have once smashed a chest.

In the Church of St. Cuthbert it should be possibbe, but I don't get the option. Neither in Jaroo's Church (both in Hommlet).

My mages or druide cannot use any spell rolls (or I don't know ...
