I completed that quest. I have a female character and I just used Celerity to keep running back and forth from both of the gates. You just need to make sure to keep the zombies from piling up against the gates or you'll lose. After, he gave me Jaime Sue(his shotgun), and I think I got 3 xp.

Was that the tape that was in the bounty hunter's trunk in Santa Monica? I went and got that thinking it was the tape Gary wanted for the poster of Jeannette, but then I found the film in the Chinese Theatre. Who gives you the snuff is enough mission...Gary?

I did kill him but the blue force field and the energy beams are still coming down from the ceiling randomly. Must be a bug in the game then. I guess I'll have to go back to a previous save and try it again. I am guessing that maybe the way I killed him wasn't supposed to have worked. I ...
