so does this mean that if you have a paladin in the party you cannot take on the "evil" quests in the temple?

I killed the snake in the temple before accepting the quest. Now, whenever I kill the earth temple priest that the snake is dead, my paladin "falls".

Is it because I am lying about this quest, or is it because I'm a paladin and shouldn't do what the evil priest wants me to do? Any help on this one ...
