Not to be stupid, but where do I get the 2nd patch, and do I need the first to do the second?

Can anyone tell me why it is that I have to leave the map entirely in order to loot the dead after a battle? I have to return to Hommlett, rest, and return to the dungeon in order to see what was carried. I try clicking on bodies (which glow like the tutorial says they will), but nothing ...
