I did place the meat but the Umbe Hulks just ignore it. What am I doing wrong?!

OK, I know that I need to distract the Umber Hulks in the De'Arnise Keep with the dog meat. But how does this actually work? All I seem to be able to do is to leave the pot on the ground next to the area with the dog skeletons - the hulks totally ignore this and slaughter my party anyway... please ...
