I encoutered plenty of these things in the 4th level of the catacombs, and yes, that's a trap.
A little red creature waits in a hole (look like an egg), and if you pass enough close to it, it jumps over you, and you have to run^^
It tries to go under your feet, and if it succeeds, it does critical ...
