I have a folder titled "portraits" in the program file but there's still nothing there. Is there a certain place I'm supposed to create this directory?

I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing this question, but it's driving me mad.
I can't seem to get custom portraits to work. All the pixel info is correct, so are the way the portraits are named and formatted. My problem is that I can not for the life of me find the "portraits directory" they ...
