The best way is to have a couple of clerics with lots of holy smite, an undead hunter and a doorway.

Undead hunter positioned in doorway+clerics casting holy smites=lots of dead undead things.

At least it worked for me...

I don't think it matters whom who choose. I think I have done both and still gotten the stronghold. Choosing the lord is worse I think. IIRC the head of the pally order is less impressed if you do that.

I always use daystar to immediately kill the lich that guards it. I did it with my solo bard and it was the first thing I did after the dungeon and circus. So it is easy to kill lich's with it
