Sorry to have bothered you guys! I figured it out after a few tries. The strategy guide is wrong.
Happy New Year!

Um, well, I have done at least two places involving quests without actually having the quest, and I have picked up quest stuff from them; the game just automatically starts the quest... whether you want it or not!

I currently have a High Elf Mage/Rogue, lvl 18. She has 4 lvls each in Destruction and Sneak perks, basic 170 Magica. 190 Health, 160 Stamina (more with magic equipment) but I'm now feeling the disadvantage of not leveling Light Armour any higher than Agile Defender. She had to turn tail and depart ...

just out of curiosity, what is the big perk you can get out of alchemy?

Poisons. Healing. Protection.

Healing is especially useful cos you don't always want to drop a destruction spell or remove a weapon (esp if dual wielding spell or have a 2hand weapon) to use a healing spell. Though ...

Like dragon wench, I prefer Rogue types; only I prefer rogue/mage rather than rogue/fighter. :) Having said that, I make sure she can use a sword as well - mana does run out eventually, even if you play a High Elf.
Currently running a High Elf specialising in Destruction, Illusion and Sneak.

Mm. Interesting. An advantage in Oblivion is that you could regulate how fast you leveled. NOT the case in Skyrim. No keeping key skills in Minor Skills any more! :( :( Ah well... Gotta learn a whole new way of operating.

I've found all 3 characters I've tried so far are underpowered!
I had a Sneak/Mage Breton who kept getting killed (got to lvl 10 only), a Sneak/Mage Dark Elf who lasted longer (lvl 16), and now I'm trying a Sneak Wood Elf with minimal magic backup and Archery as her weapon skill. Currently lvl 8 ...

Yeah... lots of racism on all sides, and really nothing whatsoever to do with being Imperials or Stormcloaks - it's just endemic between all the races, seems to me, just like in RL. So I ignore it, pretty much. My girl is a dark elf, and has no intention at present of joining either Imperials (who ...

So the games they got were OLD Bethesda games? They probably had most of 'em anyway, if that's the case. Only worth giving your baby an outlandish name if they are also going to get free copies of all future Bethesda games as well.

Decided to try that 'Verify Game Cache' again, even though it downloaded (or whatever) fine before, but didn't alter anything. This time, it seems to have worked! I have a game! Dunno if it will last, but hey! I got a couple hours playtime (including a freeze and reboot). I'll give it another go ...

Meh. I know what you mean, dragon wench! I don't condone piracy in any shape or form, for any reason whatsoever, but when a company can't be bothered to make sure a game plays properly right from the beginning, they don't deserve our loyalty.

Eh... now what?!

Steam updated. Now I can't play the game. Just get opening screen with Bethesda on it, followed by the screen with the silver dragon logo - then... nothing. It just sits there. Hitting Cntrl/Alt/Del produces flickering. Sometimes it resolves into the Task Manager, sometimes it doesn't and I have to ...

Picking things up... in case you don't know

I don't mean just pressing the E (activate) button to open containers/bodies, but actually picking things up and moving them around, as you could in Oblivion, etc.
Took me ages to figure it out! It doesn't say in the manual. In case anyone else has wondered about it:

You do use the E key, but you ...

I tried scrolling up and nothing happened then all of a sudden it was like I was on the floor looking up. Even in third person. I think I may wait for the patch to come out. I spent three days and only got 6 hours of play because I spent most of the time with tech problems. I even thought i was my ...
