You can't disable it. One of the unique features of this game is that death is permanent, and it will affect you even if you try to quit and reload.

I'm actually surprised both of you are annoyed at such minor details. I personally found much larger reasons to both like and dislike this game. I thought pretty much all the work they did on improving character development and skill trees was totally worth it. Combat and levelling is much more fun ...
