I have my game reloaded and my characters are standing in front of the skull. Beneath the skull is a solid green box where the stairs would appear to belong.

Thank you Sparrow. My computer went down after I posted the message so I might have to start over, but now at least it would be worth it. I didn't play for 6 months after I got stuck.
