I agree, but not with the backstabbing. I never can get it to work. But it gets a lot of positive comments, so it's probably me.

You have to be hiding in shadows or be invisible and be standing *behind* the victim *and* be using a weapon a Thief can use, that is Daggers, Short Swords, Long Swords ...

Well what do you need to have an efficient, to-the-end-game thief? if I make my thief a level 3 or 4 and then make him a fighter, don't I end with deficient lockpicking and trap skills? I don't really like this jack of all trades kind of character, tbh. I like dedicated killing machines

A Fighter ...

You don't need a thief in IWD. Locks can be bashed or opened with spells, and traps can be avoided or survived. It will require quite some reloads however.
For most players this is annoying as hell, but if you don't mind you can finish the game without. One disadvantage is that it can take a very ...

Not on all Slings, I think. I remember changing *some* Slings from No to Yes in the "Allow strength bonus?" field in Near Infinity.

Bows are generally better, since they get two attacks per round.
Light Crossbow of Speed also gets two attacks per round.

All missiles weapons do Piercing damage, so no difference in that regard.
Personally I change sling Bullets to do Crushing damage, so that they are more useful against some ...

Didn't know that Rangers got extra attacks with 2H weapons. That's stupid, but I guess it was easier to code...or else it was an oversight.
It's *supposed* to simulate dual wielding, so if you're a Role Player your Ranger should not use 2H weapons.

Maxed stats are boring and devalues items like ...

Personally I found that the game became just too easy when my Bard reached lvl 11. For healing I mainly use Potions, Lay on Hands and various healing items (mainly potions and scrolls, but I've also seen a Wand of Healing with 50 charges) I find, freeing up spells slots for combat spells. The Cure ...

Instead of a pure Thief I'd go for a Fighter/Thief, Mage/Thief or Fighter/Mage/Thief instead. A pure Thief very soon maxes out thieving skills and suffers from lack of protection, in form of helmets and/or spells.
Figher class gives you better HP, THAC0 and AC, while Mage gives better protection ...

Even with an enemy adjacent you can still shoot at *other* enemies without penalty.
The Strength spell is an excellent strategic spell in IWD, since it's duration is one hour per level of the caster. So a couple of Strength spells can significantly increase the power of your party and is well worth ...

Personally I never play with Bards, because the War Chant of the Sith is way overpowered and breaks the game. Not only does it regenerate the whole party, but it does is so *fast*.
If you like an easy game, use Bards.
If you like tactical challenges, avoid Bards like the plague.

Hey, I used to play my version of IWD and HoW without problems. Its been a few years but I tried to play today and it would not work. As soon as I left Easthaven to go on the trip with Hrothgar the game freezes. The characters still talk and the animations still run but the buttons are frozen and I ...

If IWD had the character interaction of BG2 then it would be fantastic. I really like the game but it pales in comparison to BG2 because of that. I have yet to play IWD2.

You can have character interaction in IWD, by using the Icewind Dale NPCs:

Pocket Plane Group - Bending Baldur's Gate 2 and ...

I'm playing through Icewind Dale for the first time. I have just finished Yxonomei and so far i love this game What I dislike most about this game so far is that the characters progress at a different speed. right now my thief is level 10 while i also have characters who are at level 8. this bugs ...

One level of paladin for a sorcerer is not a bad idea. The boost to saves can really help.
Also, the monk/druid combo isn't bad, but stick with one level of monk.
The Fighter could use some multiclassing, I'd suggest Barbarian.

As for your gripes with 3.0 rules, at least now the rules make sense ...

Comments on my party?

I'm about to create my first IWD2 party. 3rd Edition rules sure are more complex than the 2nd edition ones, and it seems to be tailor made for the min/maxing munchins so that they can create the ultimate power-party.

For me the "charm" of the older AD&D games were the restrictions, like Clerics ...

For me it's a Fighter/Thief. A Thief is absolutely vital in order to deal with all the traps, but a pure Thief is over-kill. In IWD I always have a Halfling Fighter/Thief using Short Swords and Slings and later learning Large Swords and/or Daggers, so (s)he's able to use any backstabbing weapon ...
