I'm quite sure that it's a glitch.
The same thing happened to me in the Ancient Tomb and there wasn't anyone either...so I think it's the same in this case.

It a mage can't cast spells it's usually because of a too low charisma.
It hast to be at least 10 to cast the weakest spells and 18 for the strongest.

I started playing this game again with a friend.
I don't know if I'll have this problem again because we're still in the main halls but if anyone has any idea how to fix it, please tell.

The characters move faster if you let them run.
You can turn the run mode on with the right shift-key.
However, I wouldn`t let your son play it alone because there are some quite scary scenes. (Once I played it for three hours when it was already dark outside ,my parents were downstairs and my door ...

I have the same problem.
When I finished the game I wondered what happened to Kya but I thought it would be normal.
But now I know that you have to fight Kya.
