Gothic 1 is my personal favorite, and a fantastic game. I highly reccomend it. Gothic 2 Gold is also an amazing game, at least if you can get past the sometimes frustrating difficulty level. Gothic 3 is a terrible, unplayable abyss of fail and lose that you should never play.

I'd really suggest playing Gothic 1. It's similar to Gothic 2 and in many ways better, IMO.

Oh, and while you've probably found this out by now, lol Gothic 3. Such a terrible game. =-(

As for the Sacred reccomendation, it's more similar to Diablo 2(which it's pretty much modelled after) than ...

*Spoilers?*

Are you referring to the test of fire, with the quests given by Serpentes, Uthar, and Pyrokar? If so:

For Pyrokar's quest, head to the north-eastern area of the world, but when you get to the point where the path heads up to the hunter and black troll near the lake, move off the path ...

That is horribly shallow and generalized, even for mass-market media

It's only basis in reality would be that games that implement features that serve little purpose are generally poorly concieved or unfinished.

It's normal for there to be no description of the door when you look at it. Look straight at it, and do what you normally do to open a door. You may have to step back slightly from the door before using it.

If it gives you the message about needing a key, you either didn't get the key from Atille ...

The interface in Gothic 1 & 2 is indeed quite questionable. The controls in the first game are also a bit odd, but you can get used to them. Outside of the inventory, the controls in Gothic 2 are decent.

The combat in the first two games is good, but also takes time to get used to. The open world ...

There are a few minor ones but nothing huge, at least as far as I know.

WorldOfGothic has a few small mods:

If you search around, you can probably also find a few texture replacements to make the rocks and trees look a bit less dated, and some model replacements to make the ...

That's unfortunate. I like the graphical style and core gameplay a lot, and there are few games like this.

I've done pretty much everything suggested(reinstalled, run as administrator, disabled UAC, updated drivers, set compatibility mode, downloaded 9.0c runtime library) and it still crashes. :(

It always crashes at the same place, too. In the sewers at the beginning, in the water with goblin archers ...

Is heavy instability normal in this game or is it just my system?

I have The Collector's Edition(V1.5) installed, and it crashes approximately every 10-15 minutes.

Is this normal?

As for my system:

Dual Core AMD(~2.6Ghz)
Nvidia 8600 GTS w/latest drivers
2 GB RAM
Windows Vista 32-bit(with some of the updates, but not the most recent ones)

Yes. The character has a level that increases through the game(XP is gained for killing enemies), and that determines which attacks and combos he/she can execute, what weapons can be equipped, base damage, and stamina.

It was made by a now defunct studio called Rebel Act and was released in 2001, IIRC, though it's graphics hold up suprisingly well(they're at least as good as Gothic II's, IMO).

There are four characters the game can be played through which, each with their own attacks, combos, and weapon ...

Arx Fatalis, perhaps?

Or Blade of Darkness? BoD isn't an RPG so much as it is an action game, but features a fairly unique style of melee combat and level design that is gorgeous and varied. If you're looking for ranged combat or magic, though, there really isn't any.

How precisely does Identify work?

I know that If I try to ID and succeed, I can continue to do so with other items until I fail.

Once failing, how long is it before I can attempt to ID something again?

How does this change with ranks in the identify skill?

Dark Sun: WOTR question...

The first battle in this game(against 4 draxans) took me 2 or 3 tries with a party of four ninth level characters transferred from Shattered Lands.

I also found the same encounter quite difficult with a party of four characters made in WOTR rather than transferred.

Is this typical of the ...
