Intelligence is important. It determines the amount of choices you get in dialogue. In Fallout if you had a very lower intelligence some NPCs would refuse to talk to you. They will start exploding as soon as they are close to you. And, yes, you will take damage. I don't remember how many cows are there nor how much damage each explosion deals to you, but you can lose lots of hit points, and if you are already weakened you will die.

Last time I played BG2 I was gonna take the cavalier kit, but then I remembered how annoying is getting levels sucked by those blasted vampires, so I went with the undead hunter kit instead. There are more vampires than dragons anyway. Now, TOB, that's another story, lotsa dragons.
