Mass Effect very glitchy?

Well I've been playing it for a few days now and am getting sick of it crashing/locking up, I've got the official patch to no apparent affect. Error messages, on the occasions they appear, are many and varied - generally stating that a variety of files are missing ...

Unfortunatley not, the above ground section is simply a large empty room with a big hole in it - no doors, no ghouls, robots or anything else to interact with

I've entered the above ground area of the powerplant (on route to repair it), however I can't find a way down to the lower level. There is a big pit in the main room but no sign of how to get down it :(

In all the walktrhoughs there is no mention of how, they all seem to assume that it is obvious ...

Back I go

Literally stuck in the village post festival - the fourth and final wave of Duergar etc have attacked and been slain. However I can't get the Foster father or Georgi to talk and cannot therefore leave the village or go any further

Has anyone else had this problem ?
