So basically it uses up what (paltry) spells the wizard already has memorized?

Do the spells used in either trigger or (either) contigency have to be memorized, or just known?

Yeah I know. All the enemies kill you in 2 hits and cast time stop and finger of death your party members with seemingly no saving throw granted and blow you to pieces. Or simply sneeze and kill your PC. So you have to run around and get all these +7 items and even then you only last 30 seconds ...

Aerie (come on, she's a great healer and awesome spellcaster)
And in the last slot whoever I pick up for whatever quest... Anomen, Nalia, Keldorn, etc. Keldorn seems a bit weak to me. I'm not sure.

Well, I played Icewind Dale II, and I have to say that from what I see I like 3E a lot for a lot of reasons, but for other reasons it seems to "messy" and a lot of things are menial.
