problem solved. i needed to uninstall and reinstall to fix it. i only reinstalled the base game, so im not sure if it'll be working if i install the expansion again.

Unfortunately, even if i talk to bevil it doesn't register. and i've attempted creating new characters to try and see if that was the problem, and the same thing happened.

Im not sure if it's something that was fixed with updates or if its something specifically wrong with my copy of the game, but where the first shard is recovered, the cutscene to continue the storyline isn't triggered.
