Fortunately I had one earlier game saved that I could go back to. Problem... resolved, anyway. Hope no one else ever has to deal with this truly frustrating bug. Thanks for all the suggestions!

My initial thought was the same as Kmonster's; he is not blind is he? That is exactly how they behave when they are blinded by something.

Whether blindness can become permanent I do not know, but it would be a cool feature if it could and you would have to use a priest or temple to get it cured ...

Where and how? I've tried to customise his attack method but it changes nothing.

Check to make sure he has bullets. Is he out of ammunition? If not, could you accidentally have highlighted his melee weapon?
