It certainly was easier to get into the plumbing of Civ 2 and change various parameters to keep it say stuck at one tech level if you wanted to see what a medieval globe looked like.

2) campaigns should not read like a treasure map. First go to town A, then slay monster B. Take cryptic clue C, to crackpot mystic D, who gives you the next piece, etc etc.
This is one of the most important ones I think, you have to keep it loose and freeform, but its a bit of a balancing act ...

It seems to me developers are leaning more and more to the casual gamers, than the hardcore ones.
Yep, it makes economic sense as there are a lot more casual gamers than hardcore gamers. Nothing wrong with a good immersive experience mind you, but a too-blinkered focus is rarely healthy.
