NPCs Fighting

Post by Lightning Rod »

I couldn't find this in the search. Possible Spoiler

I just started the game and got Xzar and Montaron then Khalid and Jaheira in my party. I went to Nashkel and suddenly these 4 started fighting.:speech:
Their ID circles turned purple and I couldn't control them. Is this a result of alignment issues? I'm new to BG and I wasn't expecting this!!
BTW Khalid and Jaheira won, but I had taken most of Xzar and Montaron's equipment when I got to Nashkel.
Thanks for the help.

This is indeed an alignment issue, though there is more than that involved. The issues being such things as reputation. There are threads on the subject. If I can find one I will point you in the right direction. You have not come across the worst case scenario, Montaron and Xzar can just leave, taking their equipment with them!! This is a prime example of why you should have saved games, and not just a recent one. It is a good idea to listen to what the NPCs are saying to you. I have probably given you enough information for you to work things out for yourself. I believe that you will get most fun, if you do so, but don't hesitate to ask if you are unable to do so.
A useful thread is "NPC Animosity in BG1...."
Note that your charisma also has a bearing on what happens.

Thanks, I reloaded and got past that issue. I would prefer to get everyone in my party similarly aligned.
I was wondering if any exp points are added to a new NPC when I add one. Is it better to build up the ones you get early or does the game allow you to get an NPC later and still build him up to a reasonable level?

NPCs level up, but at a far slower rate. There's at least one mod that "fixes" this somewhat. Generally, you're fine picking up NPCs until you reach Baldur's Gate. Most NPCs in Baldur's Gate are thieves, which you should get as early as possible so you can pick their skills. This goes for warrior-types too, to a lesser extent. Wizards actually benefit from being picked later, as they will start with more spells (Dynaheir will start with Fireball, etc.).

Regardless, you can always use CLUAConsole and GateKeeper to change your NPCs to your liking.

I've actually got a question referring to this as well. I've been playing for quite a bit so far, and I've noticed that none of my NPC's talk at all. Is this a bug or something because I've played with an almost all evil party and yet there is no banter whatsoever. Can someone let me know what this could be.....
"Evil isn't created so much as its made through bad decisions and your environment. You cant start out a nasty person. You can try at it though. Usually when things are good, even the nastiest people have some shred of decency. Although that could be false, heh" -A much more nefarious person than me.

It could be that you have given them nothing to complain about. If your reputation is not too average or low, you will be keeping them happy. I think that it is only when you become heroic that they start to grumble, leave, or fight.
