this whole globel warming who ha is just rediculous i mean wow the water is going to raise a couple of inch's, all i can say is at least it wont take as long to get to the beachs.

Gee... all this just because I said it is up to people whether they want to be environmentally friendly or not? Let me be clear. Yes, I am concerned about all this global warming issue. Yes, I noticed that the weather patterns are somewhat out of whack these days and I agree that it is our responsibility to address these problems.
At the same time, what I don't agree with is this attitude of dictating others to follow your example just because of what you feel as the right to do. Just because you own a Prius or even a 'green' house doesn't entitle you to force people to follow your example, especially those people who can't afford them. That, to me amounts to nothing more than being a fascist.
If I drive some ageing car which spews black smoke, then yes, I admit I am polluting the environment but if that is my only means of transport between work and home, plus the fact that I cannot afford to buy a newer and better vehicle which pollute less, is it right to call me irresponsible? Even if I wanted to, I can't because of financial constraints.
If people want to do the right thing to be environmentally friendly, you're more than welcome to do so. If some don't care, that's their problem. If there are others who want to do it, but lack the means to do so, just do as much as you can to help the environment.
As for me, I know I'm not perfect, but I try my best to do my part as a responsible citizen. I walk/bicycle to a friend's house or a destination if it is within a close distance and only use the car/public transport if it is for some place far away. I switch off the lights or any electrical appliances if I'm not using them and I always throw my rubbish into the dustbin. It ain't much (and I'm not gloating here), but at least I'm doing something rather than nothing.

So why is this thread getting attention now? Did something change in the media in the US too? More environmental coverage since the hurricanes?

It's not a matter of inches, it's a matter of metres. Up until now it's just ice in the sea that's been melting, that doesn't raise sea levels, but if the ice on land starts melting the difference will be globally disastrous. Optimists hope that wont happen, but it has happened before, and current CO2 levels are higher than they have been since that time, and rising, thanks to human activity. If we let the nimby types have their way and plan for a best case scenario and the worst happens may the gods help our grandchildren. Personally I prefer to plan for the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

I think it is actually pretty interwoven ball of wax. The food we eat is dependent on pesticides to have the modern yields. Guess what pesticides are made of? Petrochemical industry.
I don't think people should give up on the environment and it is certainly a good cause. I am on the look out for 'localy grown' in my community and I hate to do things like drive too much, mail too much stuff, or fly. But you still got to live. I sent a friend a package because I thought he would enjoy it full knowing that gas would be used to get it to him.
I think its important for both so called sides to remain open minded and be open to dialogue (and questioning their own views).

I watched the documentary entitled "The Inconvenient Truth" and from there it change my perspective in our planet.
Its quite disturbing that the movie " Day after tommorrow" will possibly happen if the global warming is continue to take for granted by the people...
What catches my attention is that some areas like Greenland and Mt. Fuji in japan is that Ice there that has an estimate lifespan of maybe 10yrs to melt are starting to melt..
