if you are good with restoration you could just cast a heal other *heal on target* spell on the horse.as for dead horse...dont let it die.

be warned...the shadows will pull you into the darkness.

That's why you park your horse in a nice neighborhood, remember to put change in the meter, and check up on it every hour or so, no matter how ridiculous you look in a speedo in public (they're laughing WITH you, not AT you).

Seriously, though, don't take your horse somewhere stupid. If you're getting the black horse, or white horse, than it's a serious investment, and you should treat it as such by hopping on it and running like crud when something really big and scary that you can't take out before it eats your horse starts chasing you. Stick to the roads, and, if you're lucky, there'll be a guard nearby that will slow it down just long enough for you to make a quick getaway, not to mention fill it up so that it's all full and bloated and won't want dessert, just yet.

That, and if you're making enough money to blow on black horses like that, you should probably get some training in Restoration so that you can cast even a low level heal-other type spell on it if things get just a little too close.

Or just get
Spoiler
Shadowmere
, it's as fast as the Black Horse, and it cannot die, because it is forever an essential character.

Spoiler:
Spoiler
You can get it by completing the Dark Brotherhood quest: Purification.
End of spoiler

I never found 'heal' spells worked om my horses - and yes, I use ranged 'heal other' or touch 'heal other' type spells. Only thing that works for me is 'wait' for an hour, beside the animal, and then it is ok.

And yes, always leave your horse in a safe location. I generally fast-travel the horse to a city and walk/run/fast sneak from there. I do take the horse to other locations I have been to previously, but I always scout round to kill anything aggressive nearby before I leave it there.
But there will always be the odd times when you can't prevent your horse getting involved. I have twice had a horse get killed; at least I think they were killed. I'm not sure, because both times the injured horse ran off, badly injured, with a will-o-wisp following it. I followed in hot pursuit, killed the wisp, both times, but there was no sign of the horse (easily identifiable because armoured) even though I checked all around and even back at the place I got 'em from. I checked there several times, to give 'em chance to get back home, and at the stables outside Imperial City. I have a feeling that they just vanish when they die.

I also wonder what happens to the horse you WERE riding when you get the DB quest horse. I tried saving game and riding my old horse back to stables, but DB horse was gone when I walked back. I reloaded save and rode DB horse to stables, walked back to location and old horse still there. What to do? You can't LEAD a horse, you can't ride it and retain the new horse (yes, I tried, and the DB horse had vanished). So, does your old horse stay there forever - or at least for the rest of the game? I don't like leaving it there...

I'm not playing that particular char any more, but I still wonder...

When
Spoiler
Shadowmere
isn't your active mount, he will go back to
Spoiler
Fort Farragut
,
But you can take him again (of course, he's yours)

You can't heal your horses? Then it must be (or very likely) a bug, do a troubleshoot or two

So it doesn't just vanish? Ok. :) Thanks. That means I could reload the char, collect my old horse and put it in a stable, then go back to collect from given location. I know it's silly, but I would feel much happier with the poor old thing in a safe location! (Sheesh! What a fus to make over a set of pixels! But I'm quite fond of Maborel's paint horse! :o )

I have never been able to heal my horse with spells, though obviously I have tried. I came to the conclusion it was just one of those things; but if eveyone else can do it, it must be a glitch. Come to think of it, I haven't tried since I got the latest expansion: the warrior fort/castle/whatever near Chorrol. Maybe I should see if it fixed it. After all, it locked the door of the Mystic Emporium and made all the contents of the store look like free pickings!

Some people would probably see this as cheating.. but another option is to download Alien Slof's horse mod. In addition to giving all the horses gorgeous new textures, she had made them essential so that they only become unconscious.
You can get the mod here. (warning: this site contains adult material)

wow... im on level 12 and i got more than 30000 gold...
if someone thinks this is too much, then this game is far more easy than i thought (i don't use cheats!! those are for noobs who wanna stay like that! lol)

anyway, its realist that a horse dies if you let it nearby a whole bunch of carnivorous men (lol) but its just a thing that im not used to...

It's not difficult to make gold in Oblivion, that's why I use a mod that makes the economy a bit more realistic.

Oh please, cut the the term "noobs" this isn't a forum where it will earn you any respect.

On topic though, I suppose it really depends on how you define cheating. I view making horses unkillable to be more of an "ease-of-use" thing, and it gets around Bethsoft's greedy and moronic policy of charging for horse armour...which should have been included in the game when it originally shipped.
As far as realism goes, no it isn't realistic for horses to be invulnerable, I agree. However, dead eyes and purple-black coats aren't realistic either, so instead I'll go with Alien Slof's retextures, and some mods that make the economy more challenging.

You are welcome,
Did you just say you can now use

conveniently?

Oh, yes. I did that whole horrible Dark Brotherhood questline with that particular character. Never again.

I just didn't like leaving Prior Maborel's paint horse behind in the wild... :o
