A couple of years ago, myself and two friends undertook an 'epic' BG experience. Starting off with the original and ToSC, progressing onto BG II and ToB, each of us playing one character. We had a LAN setup with all the comps right next to each other so it was a great experience. We had a blast playing together, but due to real life constraints never got to finish our game. We got out of the Underdark or somewhere around there. Now, for the first time in a long while, we are all getting together and have big dreams of finishing what we started all those years ago.
Which brings me to my question...we played a pretty heavily modded game back in the day; Ascension,Tactics, some other little ones I can't even remember. Will we be able to use our old save with just a vanilla game? I still want to use Ascension, but the other mods seem like overkill to me now and there is no way I could find all the ones we used originally. My big concern is the stability of using the modded save. Don't want to go through all the trouble of setting up a LAN if the game is going to crash 5 minutes into it. If anyone has experience with this situation, I would appriciate any imput or advice.
Thanks in advance.
Old save, big dreams
As long as you haven't saved in any altered areas in the game then you should be fine. Having modded NPCs in your group may cause problems, but otherwise it should work fine.
Personally I haven't had any experience with doing it after prolonged periods of time or with too many mods, but I had Ascension installed and when I removed it my game still worked just fine.

It's impossible to say. You can't have any items from those mods, and Tactics ads quite a lot. Some that are hard to recognize. Also, those "other small" mods we know nothing about, might be the same story there.
But it should not be too hard to fix. If worst comes to worst, Underdark is only two chapters away from ToB. Begin again with new characters and SK in the vital equipment you had at that time.

Install the vanilla game, its expansion, the patch, and ascencion. Open your save in Shadowkeeper, and it will warn you if there are any missing items.
Also, have a look at the names of the characters, if any NPC names are missing. And if you happen to be saved in an area that was added by a mod, you're screwed.
In short: Try it, if you don't notice big problems right away, you will most likely be ok.

You now bear the awesome responsibility of the Metal "Unit". Gussets of wind, seams like reality, pockets of resistance, the seat of power, and legs as flared as your temper. Polish it well; the onus is now on you.
