@Georgi: I expected you to turn up - it's getting late in Europe :D

@Gwally: Hello :) Pity you can't stay longer - a drink before you leave, perhaps?

@DW: I'm fine, and also extremely busy, so I only spam at night nowadays (instead of sleeping)

Nope :D My seminars are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday ;) Absolutely no reason to get up early tomorrow... :D Now I was going ballroom dancing this evening but it was horrible weather so we decided to stay in and drink, while chatting and trying to teach the steps we learned last week to my housemates ;)

@Georgi: Sounds like a terrific evening :) I usually have my Japanese classes on Mondays, but I decided to skip it today because I have got a cold. What dances are you learning?

@DW:  I know the feeling - I have several publications I ought to work on, but only one I'm really interested in at the moment...
There something special about thesis work - everybody turn into expert procrastinators as soon as they enter the world of thesis writing...

You spam ratio is going to increase 1:3 at least :D Have you started thinking about what's is going to be about?

DW and Georgi, now when I have you two academic ladies available, one from each side of the pool: What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation? I was taught that a dissertation is referring to a doctoral dissertaion, and a thesis is usually referring to master thesis.

Let's see... last week we did the social foxtrot, waltz, jive and cha cha... last term we also did the quickstep, pasodoble and tango, but I don't remember them ;) My favourites... the jive and the cha cha :D

I'm not sure yet... I should be doing some background reading but haven't got round to it yet... Possibly something on medieval witchcraft. :) Otherwise it will probably be connected to my special subject course (Early Jewish Magic).

Hmmm, good question. A dissertation is generally what most students have to write in their final year of a Bachelors degree... A Masters or PhD would entail writing a thesis. At least, that is how I understand it :)

@Georgi: Your dance classes sounds great :) I must try to find some time to start taking dance classes again :(

Witchcraft and magic - that's something for a BA :) What have you studied so far?

Confusing this with thesis/dissertation. Ph D works from my institution are always called "dissertations"

Aaargh, just lost my whole reply

The dance classes are great, nice atmosphere and it's pretty cheap since it's run at the students union :) What dance have you done before?

The magic course is new this year, so I was pretty lucky with that... We're only just getting into it really, last week we looked at universal definitions of magic, the distinctions between magic, religion and science, and that kind of thing... This week, we're looking at Egyptian magic - we're studying magic from a variety of other cultures in antiquity before we get into the details of Jewish magic. It's really interesting so far :) Only trouble is that some of the core books are unavailable - the library has ordered them in but doesn't have them yet

Edit: I'm not expert on PhDs, but I would usually hear "PhD thesis" rather than dissertation... however, I may be wrong ;)

I hate when replies are lost - it never seems to be as good the 2nd time

I did classical ballet for almost 10 years as a teenager, mixed with jazz and modern. Then I got some heavy knee injuries, and stopped. After that, I've been doing salsa and oriental dance (belly dance), but I'd love to try ballroom dancing, especially the Latin American dances.

The magic course sounds very interesting :) I magine thought that it must be very difficult to pinpoint a topic suitable for a dissertation?

The core book problems I recognise - when my ex studied Roman history, his class had to go out and look for some of the literature in 2nd hand bookshops. Not very good for compulsory literature

No, I'm sure the reply was longer before ;)

Wow, you are quite a seasoned dancer then... these are the first dance lessons I've ever done :D It's pretty easy though, at beginner level it's just remembering step sequences, though once you get better you're supposed to be able to respond to your partner ;) I imagine that would be easier with a regular partner - the way the society works, we all just turn up and dance with random people :D

Well like I said we're not too far into the course yet... But I have a huge stack of books on medieval witchcraft and magic sitting on my desk to read - usually the main issues present themselves when you read the literature, so I'm hoping that will help :) And we do get a limited amount of supervision on the dissertation as well, so I'm sure I will get something sorted.

That sounds awful... But one of the main course books, even our tutor doesn't have a copy, it costs about £90 and takes some time to get... he says he's still hoping to find a cheap copy secondhand. So there's no way I can get that one. The library are doing their best to get all the books we need... but then, there's only one copy and 7 of us in the class, so we can't check the books out of the library, which means a lot of photocopying costs...
