You can start by reading around here. That's the PHB, DMG and MM all in one, with some extras.
I'd start with the Player's Handbook, then the Dungeon Master Guide, and then the Monster Manual.

P.S.: I'm assuming you're talking about D&D 3.5.

If you're buying a book, D&D for Dummies is not a substitute for the Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. The three core rulebooks are always first when referring to any monster, rule, magic, class, character, or what have you.

Now, if you read through the PHB, DMG, and MM and you still don't quite get how it works, D&D for dummies is then an appropriate aid to the game. Despite the book title, if you don't understand how the 3.5 system works, it doesn't in any way shape or form mean you're stupid. I've been gaming for 9 years now and know the PHB by heart and yet some of the text they have in that book is just REALLY horribly worded.

If you mainly use a computer and are strapped for cash, get the D&D for dummies and use it in conjunction with the link provided above by GawainBS. I prefer The Hypertext d20 SRD (v3.5 d20 System Reference Document) :: d20srd.org , but both links work just fine.

The Hypertext Syberis mentioned has links to useful tools as well. I couldn't live with the Encounter Calculator.
