Breaking the plot
Breaking the plot
I've been playing for about a month now and my character just got killed (I walked into a lesser basilisk that I wasn't expecting to see) and since I don't like doing re-loads I am going to have to start over. However, I can't face going through all the usual areas straight away so I was thinking of starting as a thief and gatekeepering myself into Baldur's Gate to see how much money I can make from pickpocketing and breaking into houses before heading out into the wide world again. Are there any encounters that I have to avoid because they will break the plot?

By 'breaking the plot' I mean stopping the game from working. I know if I use Gatekeeper I can go to certain areas in Baldur's Gate before I've reached the correct chapter because years ago I went and collected Alora, Tiax and Qayle in Chapter 1 because I fancied having them in my starting party. This time I was thinking of wandering around the city and seeing how long I can stay alive. However, I assume that there a certain people I should avoid talking to because it will cause the game to crash.

I wasn't really doing it just to get the money. I just felt like re-writing the story a bit and doing things in a different order.
I'm playing the game using Imoen as my PC and I figure the last thing she would do would be to follow Old Puffguts's advice and I figured she might want to see the big city of Baldur's Gate.
SPOILERS BELOW
After leaving Candlekeep and doing the easy tasks in Beregost to get her up a couple of levels I took her up to Baldur's Gate (which involved running quickly past a bunch of angry ankhegs) and once she got to the gate I Gatekeepered her in. She's now got a bit more experience by doing all the tasks in the Thieves' Guild, has robbed the Temple of Wonders of a telescope and has met up with Alora (I figure Imoen and Alora would get on pretty well). The two of them are now leaving Baldur's Gate and heading down to Nashkel.

No need to Gatekeep past the gatekeeper
You can get in to Baldur's Gate early without breaking the plot if you can do what my son did when he first played.

You may need TOSC to get this to work. I have not tried it myself.
