On staking Magic Resistance bonuses

Post by Majorman »

Just recently I discovered an annoying bug - MR bonuses, provided by magic items were intended to stack, but most of the time they don't. A simple example - my pal uses The Holy Avenger (50% MR) and the Ring of Gaxx (10% MR). But every time I visit his character sheet, his MR is set to 50%. So, I take the ring of Gaxx off and reequip it, just to make sure, that the character's MR rises to 60%. But then, whenever I exit the area, enter a house, etc., the MR goes back to 50% (as if I never equipped the ring) . So is there a fix for that (I have the latest patch & the Baldurdash Fix, but they don't help)?

Try "G3 BG2 Fixpack" (i dont know if you can insert links on this forums, so just google the name of this fixpack), i believe it fixes those annoying MR bugs (and much more)

But study the readme first, cause baldurdash and this fixpack may not work together

Sure you can. :) And you're right, Baldurdash is redundant when you run the Fixpack. The latter includes everything Baldurdash had, and a lot more.

This is the link to the mod's homepage.

Before installing this, make sure you have Bioware's latest game patch installed.

I've noticed that you can still run into this withe the official TOB patch and G3 tweeks installed, but it was with the Saerileth MOD when i had her wearing the cloak of Balduran, wealding Carsymer and the 10%MR Aumulet which should have given her a cumulative 85%MR and would often get reset to just 50%. I eventually got tired of re-equipping stuff and just shadowkeepered her a natural 35%MR so she was always at the 85% she should have been through the items. I also got the dreaded freeaction/boots of speed bug in that run once I upgraded FOA the last time, everytime I equiped it it cancelled out the boot of speed. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH so anoying!
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

That's not a bug, that's supposed to happen, the RoFA makes the wearer immune to all effects that change her/his movement, including slow and haste.

Are you sure? I could've sworn that I've had FoA+Boots of speed countless times and they've always "stacked."

About the MR thing, it's the way it's supposed to be. At least in my oppinion. Otherwise, stacking Carsomyr with MR will easily max it out.

STATISTICS:

From the item description:
Special: The wearer is immune to everything, magical and otherwise, that affects mobility in any way. This includes haste and slow spells.
If they were stacking it's because of a mod, some mods do include cheats, or an 'undocumented feature' aka a bug or a glitch.

Thanks for the answers. Too bad ToB Baldurdash Fixpack doesn't have any means to uninstall. Well, maybe when I finish my current play-through, I'll reinstall.

@Thrifalas - no, I'm pretty sure it's a bug, since bonuses from other items, like the Amulet of Power and the Robe of Vecna/of Put-Alignment-Here stack nicely.

Forgot to mention in my last post that I checked Carsomyr and it's magic resistance shouldn't stack. In the vanilla game it sets you MR to 50 and is supposed to be unstackable. However due to a glitch, often if you equip the sword then the ring (or possibly other MR boosters) they will stack incorrectly. However when the game resets, when changing areas for instance, the game rechecks everything and reverts to the correct setting.

Also at lest one mod that I have running changes the setting on Carsomyr so it will stack. I'm suspecting that it's the G3 Cheatpack (they call it a tweak pack, but they're being economical with the truth! :D ), but don't know for sure as I have several other mods runnng as well. I do have all the item files from the vanilla game extracted for checking purposes, so was able to compare the vanilla and my modded versions.

If Carsomyr is not suppossed to stack MR with other Items then I outrageously cheated Sarileth's MR having her walking around at 85% all the time and thinking that it was justified. I can only hope she doesn't find out and think my heart is unpure for doing it ................ I hate to think about what happens when you royaly screw up your relationship with Sarileth ...... talk about reloading as fast as you possibly can!

A lot of MR does stack of course, it's easily possible to get Viconia's MR over 100, which is what she had the first time i had a romance with her; so I was royally pissed off when Bohdi was miraculously able to whisk her (with her 19 strength) away, bad game design or what!

I've often thought that the Human Flesh armor was designed specifically for Viconia and she's the only one I've ever had use it. Agreed on the Bohdi part with pretty much any romancable NPC, the party is just too powerfull at that point.
