Just wanted to let you know....

Post by VarisSul »

When I first purchased this game, I installed it on my old PC, running a AMD K6-2, ~450, MMX, 3D NOW!, with 320MB RAM and a 20G harddrive. I had MAJOR problems running this game on this pc. First, I got the usual "DS did not detect a processor" bit, but it installed anyway. The graphic card installed is a Hercules 4000XT PCI and my sound card is an I/O Magic ISA card. Anyway, the game ran very choppy and I couldn't get it to start normally without going into the troubleshooter and selecting "no intro". I was online with Microsoft for 2 weeks troubleshooting my system and the game and still came up with no solution.

I then decided it was time (boy, was it time) to purchase a new system. I now have a Dell Demension 4400, Pentium 4, 1.7Ghz. Installed DS and WOW! What a difference!! This game looks amazing on this system. I think MS/GPG made this game specifically for Pentium systems and therefore it doesn't work well on AMD systems. Anyone have any ideas about that?

Well, I had DS running on a Duron 800 and I'm currently running it with a XP 1600 system. Other components are a Hercules Prophet 4500 card, MSI board with VIA 133a chipset, MSI onboard sound, 256 MB RAM and an IDE RAID 0 HDD system.

I haven't experienced problems with any of the two AMD processors, the game runs just fine with no big difference between the 800/100 MHz FSB and the 1600/133 configuration.

A K7 450 could be considered a little old-fashioned for such a game, even more than the processor the chipset is probably a little too old. But I don't think that is an AMD-specific problem.

my friend has an AMD K6. the game will freeze on him every couple of minutes. don't know. since we have another player who has issues playing DS with AMD chip set, there could be something.

Well, one year ago I replaced my K2/350 with a socket A system because too many new games started to feel sluggy. I bought one of the best MoBos I could get back then (at that time that was a MSI w/ 133a chipset and RAID) and one of the cheapest processors I could get (Duron 800 ). Then I built my system and waited for processor prices to drop.

For that reason I never tried a BIOS update with the K2 board, but maybe this could help to solve at least some problems. Maybe you should try that before you upgrade your system. In case you want to upgrade anyway - new AMD processors don't have a problem with DS and they're somewhat cheaper than Intel.

I play on a AMD in a Compac of all things with no problems, other than the ones I normally experience.
I too got the message about not seeming to have 3D capabilities. But it installed anyway.
But I have not modified my system other than to add more memory and an additional CD rom drive, and an internal zip.
Maybe there is a conflict of some sort with the video card and the sound card specific to that game?

Good point from StormRaider - the newest drivers for your graphics and sound cards are strongly recommended with DS. I had severe problems with old drivers.

Microsoft is a running a technicla support site with a hardware compatibility list for DS, it can be found via http://www.dungeonsiege.com / tech support.
