Problem Getting Runes
Problem Getting Runes
Hi, I have been playing Diablo 2 LOD (offline / single player) as a barbarian, I have reached level 72 and still have not found all the second level runes. I have tried increasing magic find to over 100% and have been using barbarian skill (find item) and that has not helped. Also I tried using the H. Cube recipies from the Arriet Summit site to make higher level runes and they don't work. Any help would be greatly appreaciated! thanks
Hello 3JS and welcome to the forum!
First, check what version of D2 LoD you are playing, since this affects how you can use the Horadric cube for upgrading runes. In 1.09, you can only upgrade runes up to Thul. In 1.10, you can upgrade all runes.
Also, Magic Find (MF) does not affect rune drops. MF affects the quality of items droppings, but not the amount of gems, runes or jewels dropping. Rune drops are pure chance. With Find Item you increase you chance of finding runes though, since that is like a second drop from the same monster.
The best way to find runes is to run the Contress, she usually drops a rune every time you kill her. At Hell Difficulty she can drop up to Lo, although the best I've ever got from her was Mal. Every time you do the Hellforge quest you also get a rune. Then there are certain monsters that have a higher chance of dropping runes, the High Council and the Spectres in Act 4 are among them.

Finding Runes
Hi and thanks for the advice, the vession I am running has been updated to 1.10. Originally it was 1.07.
I also have tried doing the Countess, Tal Rasha's tombs, Frozen river, Act 4 in it's entirety several times to no avail.
This problem prevents me from going to hell as all kings are immune to physical, (barbarian only has 1 skill to do magic damage) and I need to aquire better armor that what I can buy.
Thanks again

PI's shouldn't be a problem for a barbarian. Just put one point in Berserk and all your PI problems are gone forever. You can try to run NM countess to get some runes, and either make a good runeword armor of them or trade them for another armor, like a Skin o/t Vipermagi or a Duriel's Shell.

Sounds very strange indeed. What exactly do you mean by second level runes? When I read your first post I interpreted it as you are not finding any runes from Eld and upwards, (El = 1st level, Eld = 2nd level etc) but perhaps you meant something else? Have you done the Hellforge in Act 4 and saved the Barbarians in Act 5?
How is your Barb built, is he a Whirlwhind barb? As Moltovir says, you need Berserk for Hell difficulty.

Hello again, here is a general breakdown of my character:
Warcries: Find item Lvl6 and War Cry Lvl 6
Masteries: Sword Lvl 11 Axe Lvl 10 Natural Resistance Lvl 14
Those are where the main points have been distributed others are at lvl 3 or less.
As far a my stats here they are:
Lvl. 72
180 strength 116 dexterity 107 vitality 50 energy
defense 2010 Stamina 427 Life 740 Mana 121 All Resistances are at 75
I have 0 upper level runes I have 1 Ko, and 1 Hel, all the rest are low level and I continue to only get these low level runes, El, El, Eld, Ith, Tir, Ral, Amn.
As far as using beserk yes it does work but 2 strikes from a king and I am dead! That is why I want to create better armour using runes, but the recipies don't work for me. (Currently my ancient armour is 793 defense +83 to life, I am also using a Carrion Mask Slayer Guard helm 126 defense and my weapon is the Butchers pupil cleaver-that I socketed, and a shield providing resistance--both the helm and cleaver are unique items)
I hope this provides the info you asked for. The game is getting frustrating because Hell is nearly imposible at this time and I get nothing better than what I already have in Nightmare. My stash is full of runes, and inventory (including the cube) is nearly full of runes, jewels and gems just waiting for an upgrade. Thanks agaain for your time patience and help it is greatly appreciated.

ok. sorry to dissapoint you, but as i know(don't often play barb..) you have no build. when you start a character, and plan to beat hell, you must have a build to aim for. if not, you will find hell VERY difficoult(i've tried). As for runes, my only advice must be to keep looking!
I once had a little teaparty, this afternoon at three, twas was very small, three guests in all; I, myself, and me. myself ate up the sandwhiches, while i drank up the tea. twas also i that ate the pie,and passed the cake to me

I'm not a big D2 expert, but I think you made some serious Build mistakes...
First of all, every single skillpoint is invaluable. Therefore you should foresee which weapons you're going to use in the later stages of the game, and invest in that mastery alone. Swords, Axes and Maces are recommended. Next, you should know something about Diminishing Returns: it's the point in a certain skill where all next points will be useless because of the low value you get for a valuable skillpoint. Eg, after skill level 13 in Natural Resistance you only get 1% extra resists per skillpoint, which is a total waste of points. Third, you should always pick a main attack skill and max that first: Frenzy, Concentrate, Leap Attack, Whirlwind, Berserk, ... Fourth, it's not strange that a King kills you in one hit, with that low amount of Vitality! Barbarians get 4 points of Life for 1 point of Vitality, so you should invest lots and lots and lots and even more in Vit. A good goal is 700 health at the beginning of NM, and 1200 when starting in Hell. Keep as many vit/life charms as you can find, they will give a good boost to your life. Fifth and last, every single character (well, except the Sorceress) should have some means of Crowd Control: no-one can handle large bosspacks of monsters, especially if they're aura enchanted. You need to control the flow of battle, make a front line, split the enemy in small packs, kill the ranged attackers first, ... The Barbarian can do this with his warcry's: Howl and Grim Ward are very effective to scare of monsters, and Taunt is one of the best skills to fight ranged attackers and creatures like Shamans and Mummies. Warcry is also very good to attack small packs of strong monsters. Every barbarian, doesn't matter which build, should max Battle Orders asap (even before his Mastery or main attack skill)! The boost in mana and life is huge and will help both you and your party immensly.

Hello again 3JS, unfortunately I must agree with Grimar and Moltovir that your character build will make it very difficult, probably impossible, for you to play through Hell unless you play in a party with other players, or have "godly" (ie best possible) equipment, which I assume you don't have since you recently started playing.
Most D2 players make exactly the same mistakes as you have done when they first build a char, I remember I did too with my first Sorc, who hardly couldn't kill anything at Hell because I had spread out her skillpoints without strategy. In 1.10, it's even more important to plan your build, since the skills have synergy effects on each other. If I were you, I would actually start a new Barb and this time decide in beforehand what his main skills should be and what weapons he should use. You should absolutely have only 1 Mastery, and you should only put a point in a skill that you either is going to use, or that is a prerequisite for a skill you are going to use.
You can view your current Barb as a "test"-char, and decide: what skills did you think were most fun? Whirlwhind? Frenzy? The battle cries? If you decide that Whirlwind (WW) is going to be your main skill, put 20 points in that as soon as you can. The decide what more you are going to use - do you want to combine your WW attack with first stunning the monsters? Put points in Shout. Or with Concentrate? Or do you also want a strong magical attack for the PIs? Put points in Berserk. Or maybe you would like to play a Sing Barb, a build that focus on the Warcry tree? All this you must decide in advance. The only skills almost any Barb builds have in common, is maxed (ie 20 points) Weapon mastery for their weapon of choice, and maxed Battle Orders for the extra life.

Aha, I see now what you mean. For higher level runes, you should know that these are extremly difficult to find. Just as an example, statistically speaking there will be about 150 000 El's on one Zod rune, and about 30 000 El's on one Ber rune. El is about 150 times more common than Ko, and Ko is about 12 times as common as Ist. This scarcity of high level runes, is the reason why runes are so commonly duped at Battlenet.
What recipies have you tried that do not work? Here are the recipies for >Thul:
3 Thul Runes + 1 Chipped Topaz = Amn Rune
3 Amn Runes + 1 Chipped Amethyst = Sol Rune
3 Sol Runes + 1 Chipped Sapphire = Shael Rune
3 Shael Runes + 1 Chipped Ruby = Dol Rune
3 Dol Runes + 1 Chipped Emerald = Hel Rune
3 Hel Runes + 1 Chipped Diamond = Io Rune
3 Io Runes + 1 Flawed Topaz = Lum Rune
3 Lum Runes + 1 Flawed Amethyst = Ko Rune
3 Ko Runes + 1 Flawed Sapphire = Fal Rune
3 Fal Runes + 1 Flawed Ruby = Lem Rune
3 Lem Runes + 1 Flawed Emerald = Pul Rune
2 Pul Runes + 1 Flawed Diamond = Um Rune
2 Um Runes + 1 Topaz = Mal Rune
2 Mal Runes + 1 Amethyst = Ist Rune
2 Ist Runes + 1 Sapphire = Gul Rune
2 Gul Runes + 1 Ruby = Vex Rune
2 Vex Runes + 1 Emerald = Ohm Rune
2 Ohm Runes + 1 Diamond = Lo Rune

Hello once again and thanks for the advice so far,
My build has focused around concentrate and bezerk, at the completion of nightmare I have 4 skill points I have not yet distributed. I was waiting to see where I needed them most when I got to Hell. Using concentrate as my main attack I kill champions in the underground passage, frozen river, etc. act 5 with 2 hits. Frozenstein or bosses from evil erns are no threat either. I am doing about 350 - 752 damage per hit, 25% open wounds and 35% deadly strike with very fast attack speed.
I know it seems I have a low life total but my gloves, boots, axe, amulet and 1 ring all have life steal and or replenish life. Average lifesteal has a combined total of 18% per hit and replenish is 13%.
I only switched materies when the axe I found was so much better than the swords I started with.
Going forward I will put more points into vitality and here is my list of recipies for runes:
3 Thul Runes + 1 Chipped Topaz = Amn Rune
3 Amn Runes + 1 Chipped Amethyst = Sol Rune
3 Sol Runes + 1 Chipped Sapphire = Shael Rune
3 Shael Runes + 1 Chipped Ruby = Dol Rune
The following Rune upgrade formulae will only work for Single-Player, Open, or Ladder Characters. They will not work for Normal Characters on the Realms.
3 Dol Runes + 1 Chipped Emerald = Hel Rune
3 Hel Runes + 1 Chipped Diamond = Io Rune
3 Io Runes + 1 Flawed Topaz = Lum Rune
3 Lum Runes + 1 Flawed Amethyst = Ko Rune
3 Ko Runes + 1 Flawed Sapphire = Fal Rune
3 Fal Runes + 1 Flawed Ruby = Lem Rune
3 Lem Runes + 1 Flawed Emerald = Pul Rune
2 Pul Runes + 1 Flawed Diamond = Um Rune
2 Um Runes + 1 Topaz = Mal Rune
2 Mal Runes + 1 Amethyst = Ist Rune
2 Ist Runes + 1 Sapphire = Gul Rune
2 Gul Runes + 1 Ruby = Vex Rune
2 Vex Runes + 1 Emerald = Ohm Rune
2 Ohm Runes + 1 Diamond = Lo Rune
2 Lo Runes + 1 Flawless Topaz = Sur Rune
2 Sur Runes + 1 Flawless Amethyst = Ber Rune
2 Ber Runes + 1 Flawless Sapphire = Jah Rune
2 Jah Runes + 1 Flawless Ruby = Cham Rune
2 Cham Runes + 1 Flawless Emerald = Zod Rune
I guess I will have to hang out in nightmare until I get the runes I need.
Please confirm that magic find has nothing to do with runes as on another forum I was told that they are related.
Thanks again to all who have replied, you have been a lot of help.

The recipies are fine, very strange that they don't work for you. Do you put all the runes plus the gem in the cube, with nothing else there, and click?
You are doing very little damage. In Hell, monsters will regenerate life quite quickly. Life steal 18% is going to be 4.5% in Hell, which is fine if you do a lot of damage, but you don't. Life replenish will be useless because it is far to slow. The difference in difficulty between Nightmare and Hell is much larger than the difference between Normal and Nightmare.
Also, what runes are you looking for, what armour is it that you want to build? Remember that you cannot find high level runes in Nightmare. There are many suitable armours for a Barb, I am sure you can find something else?
I still recommend you to rebuild your Barb with some planning. It will cost you more time and effort to try to find items that makes this one good enough even for Act 1 and 2 in Hell, than to build a new.
Regarding runes and MF, I said it above and I say it again: MF has nothing to do with finding runes. Whoever says so has not read up on game mechanichs. MF affects the quality (magic, rare, set, unique) of items that drop, not the type of item (armour, weapon, gem, rune etc).

Hello,
Yes I put the items in the cube and click just as the recipie states, no other items are in there at the time I click.
The armour I was going to try to build was either the Lionheart or Chains of Honor to keep up resistance and I could loose my shield and go for the double swing for some extra damage. Also either Fury or Malice for a weapon.
So the runes I need are : Jah, Gul, Tir, Hel, Lum, Fal, Dol, Um, & Ber. Those runes are the ones I am missing to make anyone of the items I listed.
The armour and weapon I have is the best I have found so far, money is no object so I would of bought something better if it came along. I also have a low grade (120 def.) 4 socket armour that I put Topaz's in along with boots rings and gloves w/MF so I could go back to easire levels with a high amount of MF in hopes of getting better stuff.
I know you recomend starting over but I am a person who likes to finish what I start. I plan to forge ahead and complete the game with this character, no matter how long, difficult or costly it may be!
I just had hopes there was something I could do to make the road ahead a little more pleasureable.
Mabey I will go back and hang out in nightmare for 5 or six more levels before I move back into Hell.

hmmm. about that cubing thing, it may be a bug.. before i updated to 1.10, cubing runes didn't work for me. have you bought the game, or downloaded, cracked or something?
I once had a little teaparty, this afternoon at three, twas was very small, three guests in all; I, myself, and me. myself ate up the sandwhiches, while i drank up the tea. twas also i that ate the pie,and passed the cake to me
Do other cube recipes work, such as making Rejuv potions and upgrading gems? It certainly sounds buggy.3J'S wrote:Yes I put the items in the cube and click just as the recipie states, no other items are in there at the time I click.
You need to consider some statistics regarding runes.
Gul runes can drop from Act 5 Nightmare (NM), whereas Ber and Jah can only drop in Hell.
A normal monster at Hell has a 0.000001 change to drop a Gul rune, 0.0000003 chance to drop a Ber rune and a 0.0000002 chance to drop a Jah rune. If you plan to play a badly build char until you find Gul, Ber and Jah, you will probably be busy for the next century.
Considering to cube them? Just for example, you need 55788550416 El's to cube one Gul. And what about 198359290368 Tir's to make a Ber? It is not very realistic.
You write that you would like either Lionheart of CoH as an armour. Lionheart is realistic and good, that one you can look out for. CoH can be useful for a Barb but if you ever find a Ber rune, think twice about what armour to put it in and whether it really suits your build! You should also investigate set and unique armours, as well as keeping an eye on rare armours with good mods. The IK set is good for a Barb to name a set, and Arkaine's valour, Guardian Angel or an upgraded Duriel's shell or Shaftstop will be a million times easier to find than a Ber rune. Also check out the Stone runeword, another armour that is realistic for you to find with some hard work.
For a weapon, you write that you want to have Malice or Fury. This is like saying I would like a used Volksvagen from -95 or 10 new Lamborghinis if you see my point. Malice is a low level rune word with some nice mods. Fury contain a Jah, and in my opionion it is not a very good weapon compared to other high-end weapons. Apart from BoTD, of the best melee weapons in the game, you also have Death Cleaver, Azurewrath, Schaefer's and some others if you want to use Concentrate or Frenzy as your main attack. The runeword Crescent moon with static field, is often recommended as a middle level weapon.
Don't forget that the full IK (Immortal King) set is very nice for a Barb. The weapon is a mace, so it's nothing to consider for this barb, but maybe your next?
Also, just for reference...note that it's very common that a Barb should do about 5k damage, have 10-15k defence and 2-3k life. If you want to stick with a bad build it is of course your choice, but unless you have other high level chars to go rune- and itemfinding with, you will have very little chance of even surviving through Hell and a billion times less chance to find high level runes.

Hello,
First off I would like to thank all of you who posted replies to my problem, all of the advice has been fantastic and greatly appreciated.
I discovered that when transmuting low level runes a gem chip is not required, contrary to the recipies I had. I now have been able to create all of them up to Thul and I am going back to normal to collect chips in order to continue to make my upgrades.
Also, I mande another countess run as suggested and wound up with 4 runes! 1 Tir, 2 Thul, and 1Hel. I shall continue to repeat this process until I get (or have the capabilty to create) the runes I need. Then it will be off to hell for another try.
My next character will probably be the Amazon and I will pay much closer attention to point distribution.
Thanks again to all of you, 3J'S
