Tough Monsters
Something very strange happened ever since I started playing Diablo 2 online. I haven't beaten the game yet, so I'm still on the normal difficulty mode. But my dad has beaten the game. His barbarian used to be able to beat the boogars out of his foes on nightmare difficulty level, (i think that's the second difficulty level after you beat the game once) but now they pulverize him. Even if he were to just stand there and beat on his enemy he wouldn't deal out any damage.

not sure about this, but when you play online, it's get harder. for each PC that are logged into the server, it get's a little harder. that is becouse you can team up. If you are the only one playing in the server, the difficoult level should be as normal(or NM if you play in that etc.).
another possibility is that the "set players" in the server has been increased, and therefore makes the game more difficoult.
as i said i'm not sure, 'couse i dont play online..

I know what you are talking about, since I found a slight cheat somewhere on the internet... in singleplayer (original, not LoD) you can type /players 8 in the beginning to make the game alot harder... I'm halfway through act 1 and have this activated, and my necro har already reached level 15!! Since it makes the game harder, you also get better rewards
I've got the diablo 2 expansion if thats what you mean by the latest edition.
I don't think that is what he meant. For Diablo and the expansion pack numerous patches have been released by blizzard. These does, if all goes well and you are online, download automatically. In the latest patch, 1.10, the health and resistance of monsters are increased dramatically.
Do you do wery little damage when hitting monsters, or don't you do any damage at all?

i depends on the type of creature i'm attacking
there were also some new creatures i had never seen before and i was in the same area i've always been in: act three
i deal out little damage to the devilkin dudes
but i didn't deal out any damage to any of the council members
and the new creature i saw was right outside the kurast docks
i forgot what it was called; some sort of spirit-ape or something
it was ghostly

Both the council members and "ghostly" creatures have very many hit points, so it might be that you are just doing very little damage.
If you enter diablo and look at the bottom left corner at the menu screen you should see you version number. Is it 1.10?
You did say you played at nightmare difficulty? How much damage do you do? look at the character screen, not at the weapon.

yeah its 1.10
his attack is set to bash so the damage is greater
his normal attack would deal out 49-151 but since its set on bash, he does 75-205
but he still hardly deals out any damage
i've got an assassin on normal difficulty and she hasn't encountered any problems
i've also got a paladin on normal difficulty without any problems, and he's even a hardcore character too

It's not surprising that he can't kill NM monsters - 75-205 is horribly low for a Barbarian in NM. Some things you can do:
-Try to find, trade or buy a weapon with much higher base damage, leech, increased attack speed, ... If you play multiplayer and have a small amount of Perfect Gems, try to find someone who sells common uniques and buy one for PGems (don't overpay; check the http://www.diabloii.net trading values forum for normal prices)
-Invest in a skill which adds to damage. The Bashbarb is a viable build, but skills like Whirlwind, Frenzy and Berserk are easier to use (except WW then) and do more damage than Bash.
-If you're lower than lvl 40, I'd recommend doing some Normal Baalruns for experience (and perhaps a good item).

@Midnight storm, there are two possibilities:
1. (the most likely in my opinion) If you have not played online at Battlenet previously, you may have played an older version of D2 when you played at your local computers. When you buy the game, you can update it by downloading the latest patches from battle.net, but if you have not done that, the game would be version 1.08 or 1.09. When you connect to bnet, your game is automatically updated to 1.10, and in 1.10 the monsters have more hitpoints and are faster than in all previous versions.
2. If you play in an open (not password protected) game at bnet, other people will come and go in your game. When this happens, you see a golden text in the upper part of the screen saying "NN has entered your game" or something like that. You can also view the party screen and see what other players are in your game. Regardless if you party or not, the game automatically adjusts monsters hitpoints depending on the number of players. So even if you are alone in one area and 5 other players in the game are in other areas, the monsters you meet will still have hitpoints suitable for a party of 6 players.

In the first one, I'm not sure what you mean by the older version. I used the same disc on the same computer, and I don't remember downloading anything, unless it happened automatically.

With "older version" I mean versions 1.07, 1.08, 1.09 etc. When you buy D2 LoD in a shop, it will be in one of these versions, then you have to download a patch from battlenet or Blizzard's website in order to upgrade it. If you have not done this, you will automatically be upgraded to 1.10 when you first connect to Bnet.
