Lower level chars in party

Post by Snogmonkey »

I'm having a real issue with some of the chars I've added into my party later on, since they're quite a few levels lower than my main and other 2 I've had with me, they're fairly ineffective and die a lot, but I had hoped they would catch up quickly. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen, and it may be my perception but they seem to level even slower than the higher level ones. How am I supposed to get new party members to catch up to the higher level ones? Or am I just destined to use pets instead?

For instance, around level 35ish I decided to change out a pet for a combat mage, who was 19 when I hired her. She falls down and dies occasionally, but has been with me all the way finishing merc and now into veteran, and my mains are 46 and she's only 24! I'd be much better off with something else, but I want a combat mage and I can't think of any other choices.

this is from the gamespot guide... at

Gaining Experience

Like any good RPG, Dungeon Siege II is all about gaining experience and increasing in level. The key thing to remember here, especially when dealing with characters that have been in your Inn for a long time, is that characters won't earn experience from killing monsters that are more than five levels above them or less than five levels below them, approximately. So if you have a level 10 character that you want to quickly soup up and get to level 40 like your main party, you won't be able to bring him or her to the final level of the game and gain massive amounts of experience. Instead, you'll have to go the long way and bring him up in level by fighting against enemies at level 12 or 13, slowly but surely increasing his level as you do so. You can speed this process up by reducing the number of characters in your party (which lets each remaining character claim a bigger share of the experience you gain), or you can try jumping to another difficulty level to automatically gain a few levels for him.

I had a similar problem. But there was only a few levels in the difference.
Whet i did was run around as the guy i wanted leveled up with guard orders on. This way the lower skilled would get a lot of hits in before the rest got involved. but in your case if your that high yourself that game will be over before you level him/her up this way.
If your really determined just take the bad character and the hero in your party
and get the hero to wait while you run through some of the more basic side quests alone with the underrated Mage. But this could take some time to go from 25 to 35.

Next time you play through, take the character into your party as soon as you meet them, or don't take them at all.
Also for the same reason leaving party members in the tavern for long periods of the game isn't a great idea either as they will fall behind.

hmm...got a little difference between chars too, but luckilly only 2 levels. My main char (combat) is 22, half-giant (melee) 22, deru (ranged) 21, taar (nature) 20. Since Those 2 lower are fighting from the distance it is not that of a problem for me. Actually it's the innkeepers fault, cause after paying for the third she got stuck in the rooms behind the bar and I took me a while to find her even when I already had the money and wanted another char (I started playing from the start again after about 20 lvls cause I wanted to make a better build for my chars)

if u have so big difference I would suggest going to areas with monsters low enough so they are more than 5 lvls under your main chars so all the xp would go to the low lvl one. Not sure if the monsters lvl depends on the location or if it changes according to your own lvl, but would go to the beginning and try it.

I have to say that this is intensely frustrating for me, too. Aside from there not being a Combat Mage choice until Act II, and Taar being too far below my level to be anything but a liability, I decided to use Lothar and two pets for most of the game. The beauty of pets is that, UNLIKE party members, they are always EXACTLY the same level as you (and they probably have double your hit points). They don't have the same range as an actual character, and they can't equip cool items (but they can eat them), but let's face it, this game doesn't exactly demand much diversity beyond "requires nature magic lvl 32" does it? My advice? Get a party member early on (like Lothar or the Dryad archer) and that's it. That's all you need. When you meet a new member, let 'em join, and immediately send 'em to the inn. If you need someone for a special quest like Amrwen for the mushroom circles then simply teleport back to town, and have that person in your party for the 5 minutes you need.

My party? I've got my main character as a ranger, plus Lothar, a Dark Naid, and a Necrolithid. The only reason I look forward to Veteran difficulty is to add a pack mule to the group.

what i did is just picking Lothar, Deru and Taar and sticked with them till the end. on veteran mode i'll invite the combat mage. And do the missed quests, which brings some variety as well.

I dont know how it would feel from the role playing aspect, but in higher difficulty modes(veteran) you'll find same NPC upgraded. So you could swap them. Dont miss out this time. :)

thx kishar for your advice...good idea...from now on I will always disband one char, let the new one join, teleport to town, disband the new and get my old one back so I will have all the chars stored in case I need them for some quest. I took amren now and switched for deru. He also had a nice armor on him. Think I will keep him now anyway cause I read that I will need him for some quest.

Since I read now that Finala is a combat mage, which is also my main char I will only use her for few quest where I need her. Want to keep one char for every class.
