You could always go Dream/Storm/Earth, get a bit of a boost in damage, have a nova of some sort to back you up when enemies get close, etc.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

Slayer is generally melee so you are right. But don't expect to always kill ranged easy unless you commit your skills and find good gear.
I think a lot of masteries work out ok with Bow Hunter. Not defense or warfare since they are melee. Rogue ok, can be bow or melee. Storm, earth, dream, spirit ok. Nature is good with bow - Ranger. It used to be the best because you could use refresh to keep call of the hunt up - not sure how effective that is these days as refresh was changed a bit.

Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

Spirit wouldn't exactly work that well in this sutuation really. Spirit is actually kind of sub-par to the entire game considering the amount of undead compared to every other enemy.
Ternion is still alright, but it's useless to a bow wielder. The Aura's and Life stealing attacks aren't really all that worth while anyways.
So I wouldn't recommend Spirit.

I'm not saying it is the strongest bow build. I think that is Ranger. But if I did Hunting/Spirit - Bow here's my build:
Spirit
Vision of Death: (Rank: 1 of 6)
Spirit Ward: (Rank: 1 of 8)
Dark Covenant: (Rank: 6 of 6)
Summon Liche King: (Rank: 16 of 16)
Spirit Bane: (Rank: 1 of 6)
Enslave Spirit: (Rank: 1 of 12)
Death Nova: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Unearthly Power: (Rank: 8 of 8)
Wraith Shell: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Death Ward: (Rank: 1 of 8)
Summon Outsider: (Rank: 16 of 16)
Hunting
Wood Lore: (Rank: 6 of 6)
Marksmanship: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Art of the Hunt: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Herbal Remedy: (Rank: 6 of 6)
Call of the Hunt: (Rank: 8 of 8)
Study Prey: (Rank: 8 of 8)
Puncture Shot Arrows: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Find Cover: (Rank: 8 of 8)
Exploit Weakness: (Rank: 10 of 10)
Trail Blazing: (Rank: 1 of 6)
Scatter Shot Arrows: (Rank: 12 of 12)
Volley: (Rank: 6 of 6)
Adds up to level 75 (sorry I couldn't get Titancalc to link properly).
The good news with this build is hunting and spirit are two of the best masteries anyway. A synergy exists between Dark Covenant/Unearthly Power and Herbal Remedy since the loss in health is offset and your damage is increased a lot by UP. Lich King/Outsider is great pets. A little boost vs. undead even though I don't like those skills much. I'd rather put a smack on undead with study prey and Call of Hunt or Dark Covenant. Vision of Death for a little crowd control. Bow skills and Find cover Trailblazing.
And I think Hunting loves bow and spear even more than Spirit loves ternion. You could make a spear build though.
