Toxeus The Murderer...Oh the Misery! [Spoilers!]

Post by Kendoway »

[Spoilers!] [Spoilers!] [Spoilers!]

Yes. Yes. And Yes!

I have read and searched diligently though all of the previously posted messages on this forum (and several others as well), so I wouldn't be asking this ~SPECIFICALLY~ if I had not found the answers elsewhere. I'm asking this HERE (with respects to Siberys) as I was once a forum moderator myself. Honestly, this board has the best information.

Ok, I’m still on Normal, and after farming Hades about 18+ times I received “The Overlord” (Yay me!). My Hunter is a PURE hunter (never picked the second mastery), level 42, dealing about 510+ worth of damage with Art Of The Hunt and Call of the Hunt flipped on.

1) I know that Toxeus was a random in TQ (never saw him there), but does he always show up in The Overlord’s Passage? I’ve run into him 3 times in row, and have never gotten the Uber chest.
2) Is he always in that first cage to the right/up?
3) Hints on killing this thing? I don’t even get a “heartbeat warning” with this fellow [insta-death!]
4) It’s funny. No game has ever made me cry. But I feel like crying when I get killed by Toxeus…

1. Yes he always shows up in the Secret Passage.
2. Yes he always pops up in that first cage to your right (upon entering the passage)
3. I have no idea how you'd kill him as a pure Hunter, never did one before. :(

He only chases you to the stairs, so you can hit and run him.

1. Toxeus reflects damage back at you, so the harder you hit, the more it will hurt you. So getting some damage reduction and not hitting too hard will get you there. Its not easy if you have skills like volley...
2. Get lots of pierce resistance if you do lots of pierce damage.
3. Get a ritual amulet from a merchant, it has damage reduction from undead.
4. You may wish to skip this until Epic, IME the drops in Normal isn't great.
5. You may also wish to invest in a second mastery before visiting the same passage in Epic.

Not everything comes so easy to some people as it does to you T1m1.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

Good for you, Tim. Different attack types affect Toxeous differently. Since I had very little effect on him, he was one of the hardest bosses to kill in this game for me. Once I figured it out, it made it much easier. But that was for my particular character. I have no idea how a pure Hunter would do it.

Some tips though:

[My experience was in Epic mode] Toxeous can only be let out of the cage by you. Once it is open, it cannot be closed. Can you attack within the cage from the outside somehow? This helps contain him. His attack can reach outside the cage, but once you open the cage, he is loose. This is how I defeated him with the most success by casting my pets in the cage and letting them do most of the work. I could not go toe-to-toe with him without dying a lot.

If you can slow him down, you can lead him to the edge of his persuit range and attack/run. (His range extends up the stairs where you found the Centaur and to the second set of cages) He is very fast though. I defeated him only a few times this way.

If you can find a special Undead weapon/armor/charm/scroll/whatever, to either help attack or defend from him, that'd be good. I think this brought me limited success.

Let us know what works for you. Don't cry, it's only a game (I actually cursed a bunch at Toxeous.) Good luck!

Yeah, the real problem with this guy is his damn damage return.
I cast eruption on him in his cage, but if I'm 'lucky' and volativity kicks in, I'm dead meat faster than I can hear the warning bell......

Hey man i feel ur pain, ive died more times on this guy then anywhere or anyone else in the game. Yeah he is most definitely using the 80% damage reflected aura from the dream mastery. Ive found out that the best way to get to him is to have damage resistance and sleep resistance but just note that he will kill you eventually if you decide to farm him like i do. My character was a L67 conqueror in legendary so i had 100 percent resistance to everything and he still killed me like at least 30 percent of the time. Its pretty maddening

I had this problem in legend. I found you do not need to kill toxeus in order to open the chest. I'm a hunter also and I found out you can set a decoy to run past him. All you have to do is kill every one else first, then before toxeus spawns run back and set a decoy. Once he spawns he should chase you, but attack the decoy. Then you just have to avoid his attacks and run past him.

Thanks!

Thanks for the great info everyone, and I'm going to try the run again when I get home (on a business trip at the moment).

Much appreciated.

Ok - I Did It!

For some reason Toxeus seems almost invulnerable to "Scroll of the Sky's Rage", but he does NOT like "Scroll of The Cyclops" - and that's how I took him down.

For the most part, he'll ignore the Cyclops, but if you position yourself carefully BEHIND the Cyclops, he'll take a lot of damage.

Got my first uber drop from the chest!

Life is good!
