Wireless Router

Post by Tricky »

I am spending some time around a wireless router that completely mystifies me. The reach should cover the entire house, but it reaches invariably between seven and fourteen meters. Sometimes it will let me connect to the downstairs LAN from the upper study, sometimes it won't. There's only two possible sources of electromagnetical interference, the boiler room and the TV (the latter of which is located right next to the antenna), but I don't think either of them should impair the network that much. I have seen similar setups in other houses.

Two questions. I would like to know if this is normal within a brick house and, secondly, given electromagnetic interference as a cause, what can you do about it?

Based on my experience with a Belkin Wireless N router, I don't think a brick house would affect the range. I can easily access the router from anywhere in my house.

Alas, I'm clueless as to the effects of electromagnetic interference on the performance of any router.

Some routers, especially the N ones have limiters to stop other people getting onto other people's connections. If you have one it'll be in your settings somewhere.

I managed to fix things by experimenting with different broadcasting channels. There's not that many to begin with, so it's a good place to look if you ever run into similar issues.
