Excess Thief Skills

Post by vonhizzle »

Ok with my fighter/thief I am unsure where to spend my excess points. I have 100 in set traps, hide, sneak, locks, and find traps, and detect illusion. Which if any of these skills benefits from being over 100? I know 100 for set traps is enuff and I know that pick pockets benefits from more than 100 (its not gettin any points tho thats what potions of master thievery are for).

Also completely different question, what fighter HLA's would you guys use with a fighter/mage that uses improved haste over GWW? Critical strike would be nice but most enemys wear a helmet negating this skill. Also hardiness is out because stoneskins, mirror images is plenty of defence. Definately gonna get at least one greater deathblow but what else should i invest in?

From some google searching I have found that open locks set traps and find traps are all good at 100. It seems hide in shadows and move silently benifit from more points because there are hidden penalties to these skills based on light around the character and line of sight i think. Detect illusions I am not sure but most say 100 is fine.
Also someone was saying that you should shoot for 167 in skills that a simulacrum would want to use as their experience is 60% of ur characters. I however do not know if this affects its thief skills or just its level (and things based on its level, ie. thaco).

Detect Illusion caps out at 100 (% based). Hide in Shadows and Move Silently get penalties in armor (IIRC about -40% max with elven chain, you may want to check in the manual though) so those are worth increasing past 100. Pick Pockets is also worth increasing for shoplifting and the occasional really hard pickpocket, AFAIK
Spoiler
the cambion in Watcher's Keep requires 150 or so if you want the Deck of Many Things

As for fighter HLA's if you're using Imp. Haste then my first choice, even above WW is deathblow and greater deathblow. Allows you to mow down an awful lot of nasties, including Mind Flayers.

I agree Galraen. With my archer mindflayers went down like dominos with greater deathblow active. However I am now out of the underdark almost finished SoA and wonder how effective it will be in ToB. Is there a monster list with the monsters levels? (I remember a few diablo ii sites had lists like this)
