item cheats not working

so, basicly i made a new character, or whatever you want to call it and im trying to get a red lightsaber but everytime i enter the console code i just get an item in my inventory with no use, no description instead of the lightsaber. ive tried it with some random item cheats as well, and none of them work. other cheats work, i used the heal, and addlevel cheat just to test them.
