Halfling Berserker - uses Halberds

Another idea - Mage/Cleric that doesn't cast ANY spells except mental ones - charm / dire charm / emotion / horror / feeblemind / doom. No damage spells. This is an idea I've had for awhile, but in investigating it I wonder if it is feasible - looking at the spell tables there are hardly any high level powerful charm spells! I think this is an oversight - there should be some really powerful charm spell, right?

Problem with these spells is that they all have a saving throw. Considering magic resistance is a problem near the end of the game, think about how many saves will be failed even if you get through the resistance...

Of course, the Power Words and Nature's Beauty still work, but I'm not sure if those qualify as "mind affecting".

Xyx, I agree about the character I have outlined above, and this is exactly my problem - The upper spell tables become dominated by powerful attacks/defenses/summons.

I would say that nature's beauty would qualify...but that is a judgement call, I think that you could sort of imagine some spells as being mental or not being mental. As far as saving throws, you are of course right, but I would include: Doom and Greater Malison in any potential spell list for this character. NOT including those spells would be suicide. I think maybe Power Word, as well, and we all know how much everyone loves those Power Word spells ...

(The actual inspiration for this character is "The Mule" in Asimov's Foundation series - he is a physically weak and bizarre person who does nothing except manipulate others mentally and nearly conquers the Galaxy before being discovered)
Note I edited this post because I think I was just too longwinded..

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there? Actually, I would estimate that in one-on-one fights, Power Word Blind is one of the killers. It's no Nature's Beauty (duration is too short), but it cannot be deflected/bounced/trapped, has no save and is very disabling (to enemies, at least). Casts incredibly fast too, of course.

a note to Koz - Ivan, above re:
A cleric w/ no healing spells.

I often have a cleric w/ no healing spells. What with the rings of regeneration, Gaxx, all the healing potions everywhere, rods of resurrection, I think all the regular healing spells are just kind of a waste...

I do like the ultimate healing spell, Heal. At least it does the job (and for free unlike rod of resurrection). w/ TOB installed, Greater Restoration is cool - it fully heals AND restores every party member - now THAT'S a healing spell.

Other than those specific spells, I think a cleric's prayers are better answered with combat enhancing spells and free action, chaotic commands, DEATH WARD, neg plane protection (not that great because of duration but casts fast at least), and summoning spells.

I edited this post I was writing too much that day :)

Yeah, something about a halfling with a nine foot long polearm, busting everything up, is just such a great image...

Unfortunately, AD&D halflings cannot be monks...or mages (so what about that halfling mage in the planar sphere????!!!??? That little bagger!) Anyway, in the 3rd edition rules a lot of these silly restriction will disappear...
