Book as a game

Post by cyndric »

Anyone read any good books lately that would be good as a game?
I just started book six of "The Wheel of Time" saga by Robert Jordan and thought that the whole setting would be great as a game.

Then I realized that whoever made the game would ruin my image of the fictional world in the book and make me angry.

Well anyway, my original question still applies.

I have a hard time imagining books as games because by definition they would be incredibly linear. You would have to do something like a point and click adventure game or, preferably, something "artsy" like Heavy Rain. You could just take the setting and sandbox it up or add in a bunch of "levels" (the Tom Robinson escape scene would have to be one of those stupid "no matter what you do you have to lose this" levels) but that would really be more of being inspired by the book and just reworking it into something that diminishes the source material.

That said, if it was done in a style similar to Heavy Rain, along with the ability to change certain things, and even though it's not something that I've read only recently, The Tommyknockers would make an excellent game adaptation.

I remember that The Lord of the Rings trilogy did spawn some pretty good games like Battle for Middle Earth strategy games but those came about after the movie versions, though.

Other than that, I'm not too sure what kind of books would make good games. Maybe Enid Blyton's Famous Five or Secret Seven series as adventure games (read them a long time ago and liked them ;) )?

I read about the Wheel of Time game somewhere before, if I thought I could get it to work on a modern system I would try to find a copy.

I don't like when a game follows the plot of a book, I just like being able to explore that fictional world, even though it never really looks anything like you pictured it.

LOTR is a perfect example, when I read the books the first time I had a completely different image in my head but now when I read them I picture Elijha Wood and Sean Aston.

One time I think I even imagined One eyed Willy sending a flying red wagon to save them instead of Gandalf sending an eagle...hmmm.

Dresden

I really feel they could make an excellent Action/Adventure with RPG elements game out of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files.

They could even task him with writing a story especially for the game. He has already written plenty of short stories, a novella from another character's POV, as well as a 4 issue comic for the series, why not write a story for a video game?

But, even though Dresden is told in 1st person, I would want the game to have the over the shoulder 3rd person that they utilize in games like ME or Divinity 2.

could even task James Marsters (who is the voice of Dresden in the audio books) or Paul Blackthorne (who played Harry in the TV show) to do the voice and they would pull in plenty of Dresden fan interest.

The Dresden Files reads like a video game sometimes, the action is so frequent and frenetic, I think it could make an excellent transition to pixels.

Actually, a company called Red Eagle is planning to make a WoT game, together with Obsidian.

I don't know much about Red Eagle beyond rumors saying they are also making a WoT movie, so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. However, Obsidian as a co-developer means this game will most probably end up being unfinished/unpolished and bugged as hell. Pared with Jordan's atrocious writing style... Nothing to look forward to, really.

A good book series as a game..

The Well World Saga. I heard someone at one time did try to make a game of this book, but consider this. There are supposedly 600 different races found in the book, not including the well world controllers (GODS, or GOD aka Nathen Brazil). Anyways, it would be cool to play it, as all the different races and such. You could do like diplomatic things like the races did to each other in the book, such as trade technologies, and cross hex zones to different tech levels. Anyways, pretty good book series, 10 books in the whole series, takes awhile to read them all. Many of the books actually have lots of adult material (like for example, this one species of aliens is addicted to this drug, and this other species makes their whole society all the same as conformity and such).

My favorite books in the series are "the return of nathen brazil" and the original one because nathen is funny and gets transformed into lots of different creatures, including an elk.

Was not "RETURN TO KRONDOR" a game very much based on the Wheel of time series? I thought they even had the same races and such in it as the wheel of time...In fact, i remember they were giving it away free when one of the wheel of time books came out, i think as a promotional thing..

EDIT: wrong series, wrong book. Ignore what i wrote here...

Actually the author of that series is almost like wheel of time series. That is why i mistaked it at first. But the game is actually similiar to the wheel of time series, as raymond fiest wrote it way before wheel of time ever was written.
