tech type question

Post by arsiwash »

OK, first off, I am not good at computer type stuff.

I recently got Baldur's Gate I again, since I want to start from the beginning and go all the way to the end.

I just started a game and tried to save the game right after character creation and got an error message

An Assertion fained in D:\Dev\Baldur\infScreenSave.cpp at line 1366

Any clue what is wrong and how to fix it?

I am currently running Vista for Windows, I am not sure if that has any effect or not.

Not sure, but if you're on Vista try installing it outside of C/Program Files (i.e. make a C drive new folder called 'Games' or something) - most older games don't like Vista Program Files.
It's also a good idea to do a reinstall and patch the game.

Not sure. Ode to a Grasshopper has a valid point though, don't ignore it. Vista is very.. particular on what you do with your own computer, and more importantly, what is stored where. If reinstalling it to Program Files has no effect, I'd suggest the following.

Have you tried running the entire game in Windos 98/XP compatibility mode?

If that doesn't work, I want to suggest a different approach. Vista has the uncanny ability to decide FOR you which files are too important for your own good to tamper with. More often than not however, it gets it wrong and programs error out because they can't save or edit one of their own files.

Go into vista's real administrator account (not the fake one), and remove a possible read-only flag from the file in question (right-click the file, remove the check for read-only). Use the ATTRIB command in the DOS command mode if the attribute property still keep setting itself back to read-only. If all that fails, try removing it for the whole BG directory.

Don't worry, this last approach simply cannot mess up anything about the game or your computer.
