Nope.. more like the masochist instinct.. :D
Though you're right I've never found the excessively "good," blond, hero types all that appealing :D

Uhm.. anyway.. back on topic *cough* (shame on me.. I even mod this forum :D )
I am, in fact quite drawn to the Windspear Hills as well, come to think of it. I also always thought that the Twisted Rune setting was pretty cool.
And, I really like Korgan as an NPC, he's quite funny.

Not for the Umar Hills map with Valygar's house - that's the PC ranger cabin map. Windspear is the one with the dryads and werewolves before the Firkraag dungeon.
And I (sorta) agree with DW, Valygar always struck me as having a lot of potential depth, though I gather that like Haer'Dalis (the other female romance option - can't believe they went with Anomen) he got neutered by Bioware due to time constraints. The whole 'struggles with a cursed bloodline' could make for an interesting romance option, especially with the Bhaalspawn factor.

It's just above and to the left of marker #2 on the Forest of Tethyr map. If/when you want to ditch any suckers just be aware you'll need to somehow teleport them into the cage, then boot them from the party, and make sure they can't talk to anyone still in your party to do the rejoin-or-leave bit. Using the cheat to make anyone join the party means you should be able to do it with any roughly human-sized NPC. I'm not sure how many can fit in there at once, so far I've only tried one at a time.

Here's how the things look for me:

- Sahuagin City - I just love the architecture of that place! I think its because of the fountains and the bright colours, but there's more. I really like the residents, the senile king and his cast-out son and the dilemma whether to save or doom these scaly creatures (the power to seal their fate). Unfortunaly, all my chracters up to this point decided to doom them :mischief:
- Cloudkill - it's perhaps the second most used spell by me (the first being magic missles), it's useful and effective and her overall effectiveness doesn't change throughout the game.
- tough choice, but I'll have to settle with the Silver Blade - chop-chop. Really cool effects when someone dies. (That's if we count SoA weapons only).
- hm... let's say Mazzy - I think she's one of the most neglected characters and frankly, the designer could have spent more attention to her. She's one of the few females that keep it cool and don't whine around (unlike Jaheira, Aerie or Nalia), she prefers to keep her pain to herself (I mean, she was forced to fight her boyfriend/fiance/thingie Patric but she took it like a man) and she really strives to achieve her dream of becoming a paladin. She's like the living proof of "impossible is nothing" and I really respect her for that. Some stupid ogre in the Slums, however, didn't, and we all know what happened to him, right? :)

Watcher's Keep Level 1 - I remember when I first went there with a party in chapter 2. It had some cool riddles, was very challenging, but also very rewarding. Purely from a gameplay perspective I think it's great, although it doesn't have nearly as much background as most of the SoA areas.

Improved Haste - Fits well with the weapon choice below and is generally a great thing for anyone not using spells to attack.

Tuigan Bow - I love archers, and this thing is just awesome for machine-gunning things to death in SoA. Will be replaced eventually, but for a large part of SoA, this weapon rocks. Combine with improved haste to get 10 APR for maximum fun. :D

Haer'Dalis - I'm not good at playing F/M type characters, and he's no exception there. I'm sure I'm not using him anywhere near his full potential, yet, he's just great to play with all the options he has. On top of that he's a really cool character, has quite unique dialogue and is fun all around.

Location: The Planar Sphere. Looks awesome inside, and if you are a mage or sorcerer it will become yours :D
Spell: Uhm...I like Edwin firing 15 magic missiles in a row XD
Weapon: Celestial Fury. Give it to Valygar and he'll become a real killing machine.
NPC: Minsc and Jan are the funniest, but I think Anomen is the most useful even though I HATE him.

1.) Planar Sphere
2.) Time Stop / Gate (improved with Mod)
3.) Staff of the magi (nerfed with removed Invisibility)
4.) Jan and Viconia tied for first. Jan for his hilarious stories and Viconia for her romance.

1. Spellhold Maze - I love puzzles and I really love the shock Bodhi gets after you "transform" and surprise her. Nice start for the payback trail!!

2. Acid Fog - all the nastiness of Cloudkill plus it slows your opponent.

3. 3 way tie (sorry) :o
Carsomyr - even more than it being +5, is that is confers 50% MR and dispels magic on what it hits.
Flail of the Ages - someone mentioned that it slows whatever it hits (even if it has 100 %MR, I have seen iron golems slowed) but I also love the fact that it is a weapon for the future as it can be further added to in ToB.
Daystar - I love killing undead and it is the ultimate undead cooker.

4. Minsc - I know he's easy to love but between comments from him and Lilacor (perfect sword for him) I end up RTOFL every time I play.

It's been a while since I last played through completely, but...

Location: Uhhh. That's a really tough one.

Spell: Insect Plague

Weapon: Staff of the Magi (coupled with the nondetect cloak, cheesiest thing ever)

NPC: I liked all of them in their own ways, but I did favor Imoen quite a bit. Tied with Mazzy, I guess, who was a good, strong female character without being bitchy like Jaheira or evil like Viconia. They both could've used a lot more banter.

Memorable first playthrough OMFG moments:
Location: Guarded Compound
Spell: Death Spell (instant bye-bye Mind Flayers, after trying just about everything else and getting my brains served up w/ketchup)
Weapon: Heartseeker tied w/ CF, Daystar straggling
Char: Nalia... yep, NALIA. Why? Newbie goes "ooh, non-squishy mage!!!" (to be fair - she *is* better than any possible PC due to her near-Gaxxy freebie ring)

Letdowns, first playthrough:
Location: Waukeen's (first glimpse of Athkatla: a market squatting in an abandoned Coliseum? in BG's sequel?? sans any explanation for it being there, whatsoever???)
Spell: Identify. (cause before I knew what generic stuff looked like and how to use lore - it was eating up 2 mages' spellslots and being a major pain)
Weapon: Lilarcor. Too freaking annoying to wield.
Char: Keldorn. Looks immensely nerfed unless you've already done half the game or read the spoilers.

Current beloveds:
Location: Linvail's posh bathtub, w/ complementary splattered brains, courtesy of Mistress Bodhi. EAT THE RICH!!
Spells: MMM (Vecna, debuff, autopause on cast, click once... and then watch them burn - most mages leaving commission forever after an instacast of one of the breachy-piercy spells), unnerfed/cheezed Summon Animals, the several Insects spells
Weapon: EDWIN
Char: Edwin

...seriously though, the weapon would have to be a tie between Blade of Roses (no combat to reach straight out of Chateau, 5k for +3 might as well be free or from a nerfed mod, grants perfect prices instantly) and Daystar (another freebie reachable 60 seconds later, and you're suddenly armed to the teeth for the entire game)

Location: that elven city with the tonquewristling name, because it means that I've had the patience to play a character almost to the end :p not to mention the place looks great and there are nice battles, quests and whatnot, even great dialogue.
Spell: Invisible stalker, a summon I like to use even in ToB. I've not found much use to many other spells of the level, save for some, which is how I became familiar with the spell. Many will probably disagree with me on this.
Npc: A tough pick here...but Korgan it is. Nice banter, I like how he handles things, useful character and his quest is one of the better ones.
Weapon: I think it was called Arbane's sword(?), it's been quite some time since I've played bg2. It's a short sword with free action. It's available early on, it's not too shabby a sword, and the free action comes in handy every now and then. Naturally, it's not a great weapon, but will suffice for me, you'll still have to fight your way to the better ones!!

- location -
planar sphere, some really interesting battles, wide variety of opponents, various architectures. you get to build a golem and take a day trip through hell as well as converse with some solamnic knights a 500 year old mage and feral dark sun halflings. it is a fun trip down memory lane.

- npc -
always have had a soft spot for aerie, she's this cute little innocent package, interesting backstory - like that she's tied into quayle.

at the same time can pull off some serious tricks thanks to her mage & cleric classes.

- weapon -
gnasher. not the most imposing weapon (or even all that powerful) but i like the slivers special effect and it can come in handy from time to time. it's versatility is pretty styling too - i think every class could use it - if not most of them.

Location: Umar Hills/Tradesmeet I'd have to say, loved the quests and items you get there.

Spell: Tough choice, I'd have to go with Fireball though, nostalgia takin' over I guess. ;-)

Npc: Oh man, I'd have to go with either Valygar or Edwin here. I know they're complete counterparts, but I just love em both. And Valygar's quest is amazing.

Weapon: Hm. I honestly can't think of one right away, so I'd have to say Flail of Ages, also due to nostalgic reasons. Loved it on my first playthrough.

Oh and, Suldanessellar I believe. @ Friendlyarm. :)

Suldanesselar, because it feels vibrant even when there is a war going on. Lots to do, great battles, and there is a sense of urgency.

Tenser's Transformation. On a fighter/mage. Pure carnage.

Blackrazor. It comes late, but it oozes flavour... and death. For good parties it would have to be the mace of disruption, because it took ages for me to figure out how to make it better, but when I did, I could revel in the dead vampires piling up.

Jan. He just cracks me up.

Stworca wrote:Jaheira.. Well. I hate Jaheira. She's an abusive, annoying, whining hypocrite. After your lovely bunch of reta.. erm.. i mean your party.. does some good things in the world, as in rescue a village from the undead, or donate money to the churches (which, unlike in real world, are not ALWAYS corrupted) she starts whining about balance.. Which allows the player to turn into an evil, psychotic sob with no remorse. First act on the list is to leave Jaheira to die to her curse, followed by burning Harper stronghold to the ground.. Or better yet. Imprison Jaheira while she suffers horrible pain from the curse, and free her just to show how her mighty organisation burns, and she is too weak and too insignificant to do anything about it.... mmm... That is why Jaheira is my favourite character. All the others are just flat NPCs for me, and i don't even care about their dialogues, which i skipped all the time. While Jaheira is such a pain, that she almost feels alive.

I LOVE you Stworca, the only one who hates Jaheira almost as much as me.

Location: I'd have to go with The Promenade. I love the feel of everything you can imagine being for sale there & after trudging through Irenicus's dungeon, it's a welcome relief.

Spell : I don't really like using magic (I rarely use mages or clerics, dunno why) but I suppose it would be Magic Missile, if for nothing more then nostalgia.

Weapon : VERY tough choice, but I would have to say Belm + 2. In my first run through of the series I was playing an elven fighter who dualed scimitars. After the severe lack of them in BG 1, I was happily surprised to find such a powerful scimitar.

NPC : Aerie, I always romance her. She can be a touch clingy at first, but of all the characters I think she grows the most.

#1
Location: Umar Hills; Shadow Dragon, Oh yeah! Half the time I get to Spellhold before the leaving Athalka, it just depends on weather Shield of Harmony is worth a three or four day round trip even if you get to slay a Dragon or two.

Honorable Mention: Chateau Irenucus is the most played part of the game and still feels like torture (it is a love-hate thing I guess) and Bhodi's Game is very good for puzzles first time through though Asylum is a bit predicable when you know the riddles..

#2
Spell: Wondrous Recall, as the only spells I really use are Resist Fear; Sanctuary; Find Traps; Negative Plane Protection; Call Woodland Nymph; and Chaotic Commands. Recall can get any of them back, it is so versatile.

Arcane Spell: would probably Wand of Spam! anything on a stick is fine, Scrolls are good too. Polymorph Self; is very strong IMHO. Stinking Cloud gets used a lot though.

HM: Scrolls of Protection. <3<3

#3
Weapon: Harbinger +3; I have a hard time using Casomyr if I have only one character that can equip a Great-sword. I really love the effect of Fireball, and I do not rest my spell casters enough to have a lot of offensive damage spells, so this blade becomes my mage.

HM; Boomerang Dagger +2; God I love this weapon, if it could be used by clerics then it would be the best weapon in the game.

#4
NPC: Viconia; I use the SOA Viconia avatar for the protagonist exclusively. (I have never once played a male Charname, and I dont like to use Anomen much, so never have romanced.)

HM: Not close but I love the voice and script for Imoen and Nalia. Jan is okay for comedy.

#5
Quote: Lilacor "Throw a coin in that fountain."

HM: Jan Janssen "Yes, yes. A "standard tactic" that..", also Boo "Peep!"

Location:

Watcher's Keep, the best dungeon in the game and the main thing that made ToB worth buying.

Spell:

Arcane - Spell trigger or Mord's Sword, I'll go with Spell trigger. Three simultaneous Chain Lightnings puts a crimp in any monster's day

Divine - Chaotic Commands, don't leave home without it

Weapon:

Fighter/Thief/Bard - Celestial Fury

Cleric - Flail of Ages

Druid - Staff of the Ram (Fulcrum if Item Upgrade is installed)

Mage - Crimson Dart

NPC

Vanilla - Jan
Mod -Saerileth

A bit OT, but welcome to Victorian, nice to see new players still pop in. And to see the occasional girl play it. In fact I personally know more girls than guys playing the game, but not many of them socialise online.

Welcome, may The Banshee grant you a good time here and reply to all your questions.

I suspect you play Vanilla from your two comments, you should try some of the excellent mods out there.

Have fun.
