I finally have some time to finish one of the Black Isle studio games I always wanted to play IWD2! So I got the game yesterday and was pleased to find the Wide-screen mod and ease of use mods, even more amazed to see it launch and go through some of the character options without any problems on Windows 7 64 bit!
So after reading the FAQS and searching the forum I'm wondering about the multiplayer aspect of the game. If I have a dedicated server (and I do with XP SP2 installed) running an instance of the game and set up a multiplayer game can I leave the game running and join/leave from my game pc at will? Or does the host of the game have to stay interacting in order for the mutliplayer to work?
In a nutshell I have the hardware and network to leave a game running with one character 24/7 on my server, can I and up to four others join/leave this game at will and still play or does a live person have to play on the host machine to prevent this type of psudo-dedicated server? Are their any advantages/disadvantages to running the game this way if it does work?

Well after setting up a MP game it was clear you can't really do any sort of dedicated server out of the box.
I have experience working on packet reversing and emulation so once I beat IWD1 and the expansions I will do some packet captures and see that I can come up with for the original as that would probably be the easiest to emulate.
