Hi,

I decided that i want to create two specialist mages for my party of six. What is a good combination?

And since I have four slots over which classes do you recommend me to fill in?

If you play pure IWD without expansion I recommend conjurer and illusionist.

If you own HoW I recommend illusionist and abjurer or necromancer or conjurer.

If you want to keep those mages pure I recommend a party like this:

illusionist
conjurer (abjurer or necromancer with HoW)
fighter/thief multiclass
ranger2(maybe 7 with HoW)/cleric dualclass
fighter or paladin or ranger (fighter/druid multiclass instead with HoW)
fighter or paladin or ranger

First off, I've never played IWD with expansion, so I'm talking based only on my IWD experience. The best specialist mage is, by far, the conjurer, since conjurer's forbidden school is divination and you won't be needing divination spells.

Second, I think that a party with 2 pure mages is an overkill in IWD. Unlike BG 2 you won't be facing that many spellcasters here and, since most of the nasty protection spells have been cut out of the game, you don't have counter spells (like Breach, Secret Word, etc.) either. So, I would suggest considering multi- or dualclassing the second mage.

Other than that, I would suggest that your group has a single class cleric and a thief as part of a multiclass (with either fighter or mage). The last two slots should be reserved to a fighter and a ranger. I prefer rangers to paladins since rangers can wield two weapons simultaneously. As weapon specialization I recommend one ranged weapon for every one (except the axe guy, he can use throwing axes instead) and two-handed swords, axes and lonswords (in that order). These are the most common weapons you'll come by. Mind that bastard swords are considered two-handed sword but are actually used as one-handed weapons.

Following on to what Majorman said, a good choice for the second mage is a gnome thief/illusionist (fighter/illusionist) multiclass with a good alignment. Gnomes (with any of the good alignments) can use the best helm in the game. Spoiler:

Since you really do not need a dedicated thief in IWD1 a multiclass thief/mage very good as you get both the needed thieving skills and back up spell casting in one package. Frees up a spot for something else you might want to try.

Oops, my bad. Good catch, "I knew that" but got ahead of myself. I frequently use a gnome fighter/thief and just totally forgot that since both classes (thief or mage type) of a thief/illusionist are prohibited from using helmets obviously the multiclass combo wouldn't be able to use it either.
